Salbutamol and Hyperactivity

The boy (5yo) has been given an inhaler for a wheeze on three occasions now over the last few years. He’s not exactly the most listless of children, but we think we’re seeing very lively, dare I say hyperactive, behaviour when he’s puffing this stuff. Has anyone else experienced be same?

And is the wheeze likely to develop into asthma?

My little girl has asthma & uses salbutamol. She is 4 and I can't say I've noticed any pattern between her using it and her behaviour, sometimes she has it during the night & goes straight back to sleep.

My daughter turns into a nutcase after taking salbutamol. Certainly makes sure her preventer inhaler does not get forgotten about!

piercinggelo · 05/04/2018 00:17

I stopped using it because it caused me to feel jumpy and hyper

Wow I wish it did me! I've had it forever and have cfs so could do with a boost.

I have only ever heard it does in kids in large amounts (like if a nebulizer- 10 puffs.)

piercinggelo · 05/04/2018 00:20

It made me feel like my heart was racing. I actually refused it when doing breathing tests with the nurse one day and explained why. She said she had never heard of the before Shock

I work on a ward where we have young infants admitted to us with wheeziness and they typically start on needing salbutamol inhalers or nebulisers every hour and it sends them pretty wild at times. They are completely unable to sleep and their heart rates really escalate!!

It’s a well known side effect of the salbutamol though and reassure parents that as we reduce the frequency of the inhalers (down to 3 or 4 hourly) then things tend to settle down.

Yes it’s an effective of the medication.

An effect even!

kyz1981 · 05/04/2018 08:32

It will increase your heart rate for a while, especially in high doses and will make you jittery, when my daughters on Nebs her heart rate goes through the roof ( they mute the machine ) it does settle in about half an hour after the medication is given so quite short lived, I can’t say I’ve noticed hyperactive behaviour from salbutamol but when she is on prednisone on day 2 she is a cow.

Thanks for the comments- there seems to be a general opinion that there is that side effect. All of that said, no puffs needed today and he’s still being a little bugger Wink
