Feeding

Could somebody please help me out?

I bought the morning after pill today. I’m currently breastfeeding my 4 month old exclusively on demand. It’s says on the leaflet that you can’t feed you baby for 8 hours after taking the pill.
I was wondering if I express all day today just in case I don’t have enough milk for her tomorrow when I take the pill would it be okay to give her a once off bottle of formula?
My mind is so torn could someone give me advice please?

Of course it's fine to give her formula! I am EBF a 3 month old and at 2 months I have her 2 bottles of formula as a sort of experiment and she loved it and had no problem returning to the breast. If you can express though, go for it!

That sounds like a good back up plan.

I'd express tomorrow (and chuck the milk) the missed feeds so that your supply isn't affected (this might not be necessary but I know that at 4 months my supply needed looking after so I expressed any missed feeds).

Of course it’s fine to give her formula; I’d be tempted to just take it as soon as possible so you don’t have the stress of wondering and just give some formula as well as whatever you pump once or twice

If you're exclusively breastfeeding on demand and haven't had a period yet, you should be fine but obviously take the pill if you think you should!

What type is it? This is some good information on the MAP and breastfeeding:

The main side effect seems to be low supply but at 4 months your supply shouldn't be too unstable.

Take the pill as soon as possible. It’s 95% effective within 24 hours but this drops to 89% effective if you leave it until 72 hours. Give the baby formula and pump/dump at her normal feed times.

Thank you all so much!
I’ll feed her with all the breast milk first and see how she is and after that if she’s still hungry I might give her one bottle. The pill is levonorgestrel and I have to take it within 72 house so should be fine to take it tomorrow.
Thanks again.

Op I've taken that one whilst breastfeeding. Everything I read said it was ok to take (obviously not routinely!) so I'm really surprised it says not to feed for 8 hours!

Mai0812 · 04/04/2018 18:07

I have read that’s it’s fine to take while breastfeeding like you said but when I got it the pharmacist told me 8 hours, it also said it on the leaflet.
Did it effect your little one in any way? Any side effects?

No but he's older. I've taken it a couple of times in the last couple of months but I think he was probably 12mo when I first took it so he wasn't feeding like a 4mo and obviously drinks water and eats food!
