Birthday presents

DD's birthday isn't far off and this year we are struggling with ideas of what to get her so a number of things relating to her hobbies need replacing so were thinking of us/grandparents getting these items as part of her birthday presents however after talking to a good friend I'm now feeling like I should be buying more dolls, toys etc just for the sake of it. Friend said you don't buy gym mats, tap shoes, leotards etc for birthdays/Christmas. I do agree to some extent but using the tap shoe example, DD's shoes are looking a bit worse for wear so could go out and buy a new pair next week or the week after but seeing her birthday isn't far off they could be a birthday gift of grandparents???
I think what I'm trying to say is: Is it really wrong to buy things relating to hobbies for birthdays rather than just toys that will hardly be used.

Your friend is a nitwit.
My dd's would be delighted if they got hobby stuff!!
Maybe your friend has more money than sense?!

Nothing wrong with that at all. I got DD a gymnastics leotard as one of her birthday presents. She didn't 'need' it (can do gym in leggings and T-shirt) but I knew she would really like one. When children have lots of hobbies then the cost of clothing and equipment can really add up.

I think as long as you get her something else as well, maybe a nice book or a board game it will be fine.

April she does seem to just buy whenever.
Softsheen DD got a leotard last birthday and her DD got one two weeks after (her birthday was a couple months earlier) and the gym DD was at last year was similiar to yours, leggings and top was ok.
DD is out of the house most of Saturday with activities so some Christmas toys are hardly played with and in the week she is with the childminder two nights and an activity one night.

Sorry Jilted didn't see your reply. Yes she will have some toys it's just at the moment we don't know what so thought grandparents could get a couple of hobby related items and we would get a gym mat and at least a few things were sorted.

Sounds perfect to me. My DPs often buy my DS sports equipment for his birthday in April as it’s the start of the Cricket Season.

My kids always get hobby stuff for their birthdays. Keeping up with their hobbies already costs a fortune so they know if they need new footie boots or cricket pads etc then they will be part of their birthday/Christmas pressies.
