Do really mucousy nappies mean anything significant?

DS2 (15weeks) has had some horrendous mucous nappies today - really horrible.

He's BF but had a bottle of formula yesterday (he has one every 4 days or so)

Dd always had mucusy nappies when she was teething or if she had a cold - she drooled a lot with both, and I guess the mucus was because she swallowed gallons of it.

Oh ok, he doesn't seem to have a cold though.

They really have made me shiver {sick emoticon!}

funnily enough though he is drooling loads

It's probably because he's drooling then.

Could it be teething, do you think?

I don't know, isn't he a bit young at 15 weeks?

why would drooling cause mucous in nappesi though?

They swallow it - and it goes straight through!

If you're worried about it, though, get the GP or the HV to have a look. Best to be safe than sorry.

katierocket · 10/05/2007 13:40

hmmm, it is totally gross, might phone the HV then. I wondered if it could have been caused by the formula.

if i remember rightly...(it was three and half years ago)...after pondering this myself many many times...i was only ever concerned if there was another 'symptom' that couldnt be explained at teh same time....and there never was.

Could be teething as my DD was drooly at this age although the first teeth didn't actually come through until about 20-24 weeks IIRC.

katierocket · 10/05/2007 15:46

funnily enough beans, teh HV said the same thing!

Yes - another one with dairy allergic mucousy nappies here. Significant that it's after formula. You could try cutting out the formula or switching to goat's formula or a hypoallergenic one.

katierocket · 11/05/2007 08:20

interesting, when he was younger there was lots of debate as to whether he was lactose intolerant, I cut out dairy for 10 days to see but it didn';t make significant difference so I stopped. I wonder if that is what it is.

Hi katie, could be any of what's been mentioned - cold, intolerence or maybe a bug.
In my case DS1 had mucousy nappies and it was definitely cow's milk intolerance. He was breastfed and as soon as I introduced a bottle of formula his poos went nasty. We switched him to goats milk formula and it stopped.
That was a few years ago though and I think I remember hearing that goats milk formula is not allowed any more (don't know why).
