Is it normal for a baby to bump his head EVERY day?

Just looking for some perspective. My 8mo discovered crawling and pulling himself up on furniture to shaky standing at virtually the same time. We've gone from an immobile baby who couldn't even sit without help, to fully mobile in all three dimensions.

I want him to explore, take risks, have a few bumps and learn. But he topples and bangs his head on the floor EVERY day. It breaks my heart each time. It's a thin carpet on concrete. We have foam mats for a play area but he won't stay on it. Now I stay with him to control his falls a little, but I only have to turn my back to him for a few seconds and he's pulled himself up and had another topple.

Is this normal? I can't get a moment to get anything done (even when he's sleeping it has to be on me). Basically even though we've baby proofed our home I don't feel like there are any safe spaces for him because he keeps hurting himself. I was thinking of blanketing the living room with foam mats temporarily until he is a bit more stable but DH thinks I'm overreacting. We have a travel cot we use as a playpen but he can pull himself to stand in that too and it's not that well cushioned. He won't tolerate baby chairs for long, he'll twist out of his bumbo to try to get out and I can't leave him in his high chair.

What do other parents do? Are daily head bangs our new normality? 😪

For me yes, around your ds age it was a new normal. Mind you, she’s 15 months now and rarely hurts herself.

Yep, I remember days when I thought could I go out with my bruised son or would someone think I've hit him! Try and remove anything that really could do him harm, corners of coffee tables can do a fair bit of damage and and anything he could pull over on himself such like lamp stands. I also put up a fireguard because my hearth is stone.

Yes - wait until he's walking (then running). My 14 month old has had so many bumps I think he's become immune to the pain Blush He's currently sporting a black fingernail after trapping it in a drawer.

Yes I think it’s normal. His balance will improve soon and he’ll stop falling over.

My DS wasn’t too bad at that stage, but he walked at 10 months and pretty much went from pulling himself up to running in about 2 days. He was a disaster zone and was always crashing into something. I’m hoping DD is calmer

Thanks for the replies, feeling a bit better but still watching lo like a hawk. It's exhausting though, he's so energetic and I am being glued to his side with no respite.

Feel your pain OP. My DD is 9 months & recently crawling/pulling up. I've managed to be behind her for the wobbles (so far) but I know we're going to have some inevitable injuries soon. Also a bit worried about it... we have wood flooring! 😩 But yes... guessing it's all normal. Hopefully they get more balanced sooner rather than later!!

My DD was like that recently for about 2 weeks; I found it incredibly stressful but she’s now found her balance and only falls every few days or less. I spoke the to the health visitor and she said they need to learn how to find their balance
