Reflux

I'm a first time mum, my little girl is almost 3 weeks and for the last week has developed quite nasty reflux. Health visitor recommended infacol to ease her symptoms, it's eased the possetting but not the trapped wind. Anyone got any tips with how to deal with it? Thank you Smile

Hi,

Have you tried baby massage? I used Infacol for colic actually, but I know that it doesn't have the same affect on every baby.

Also, you could give gripe water a go and possibly cut down on colicky foods, if you're breastfeeding.

MilkyCoffeeAndSkinnySyrup · 01/04/2018 23:53

I tried everything but nothing worked and in the end I had to change his formula as he was bottle fed. Aptamil and C&G was causing his reflux! HiPP Organic eliminated it completely!

AnxietyForever · 01/04/2018 23:59

I changed my baby from aptamil stage 1 to aptamil anti reflux milk and it worked a treat.

Hi Becki3, I am breastfeeding and already watching what I eat/drink. I've not tried baby massage I don't know much about it?!

Gripe water sprung to mind first off but she can't have it until she's a month old so I've been told, but I will try it when I can.

Infacol is for colic and has no proven impact. Colic is unexplained crying.

What symptoms does you baby have?

For reflux you can try holding your baby upright after feeding for at least 30 mins and wedging is their bed but make sure the sleeping surfaces is flat. If she has reflux and that does not work then the next step is medication prescribed by the GP.

Baby massage is generally helpful for issues pooing. All babies have to learn to poo. Baby massage is not great for a reflux baby as it involves laying down. Generally baby massage is recommended for babies over 6 weeks old.

She's irritable and cries after feeds because I'm guessing trapped wind, she'll settle once she's been burped but I can't always bring a burp up. I'll lie her down once she's burped and within minutes she's bringing her legs up and wriggling about grunting and then she'll bring milk up, sometimes it's a spoonful however she has projectiled milk across her Moses basket. She'll happily sleep in my arms when I've got her sat up slightly but it's as soon as she goes flat the issues start, it's gradually getting worse and nothing I've tried is helping ☹️

@Ermwood There's videos on YouTube for baby massage, and I think that there are baby classes that teach it, depending on what's on in your area.

It is difficult, but if it is trapped wind, they usually outgrow it by 3 months.

Got her in at doctors today hopefully they'll shed more light and maybe prescribe something. Thanks for the advice much appreciated Smile

As you a breast feeding I would push for Rantitadine over gaviscon.

Emrwood · 02/04/2018 18:01

Wouldn't prescribe anything Sad

I’ve been on here so much lately, my little one has reflux, touch of colic and also cows milk allergy.
I was told not to give gripe water for reflux as it relaxes the muscles too much and makes colic worse.
My doctors were a pain, took ages to get gaviscon, which didn’t work so went back (another 3 times and they told me to stick with it). Eventually put on ranitidine which is not working either. I’m waiting for the specialist that diagnosed his allergy to call me back today to discuss maybe omeprazole.
Be persistent with the doctor, that’s what I’ve learnt from fellow mumsnetters! Take a video and show the doctor how much discomfort your little one is experiencing. I did that and that defo got me the ranitidine.
Good luck! Flowers

Smellybears · 03/04/2018 08:32

Sorry gripe water makes reflux worse not colic!!

Emrwood · 03/04/2018 09:15

Thank you😌 when I took her to the doctors she was so much better which was annoying because he couldn't see what she's been like, I wish I had taken a video 😐 one thing I have read is to elevate the Moses basket slightly at top end and that did help last night she was much more settled and would lie on her back without screaming

I bought a wedgehog to go in sons Moses basket. I got a pack of two so use the other one under his change mat.

JiltedJohnsJulie · 03/04/2018 10:12

Yes definitely film her and keep pushing at the GPs. Don’t be fobbed off Smile

TheDogHasEatenIt · 03/04/2018 10:14

I used a wrap around sling for my reflux-y baby. It kept her upright between feeds and meant i could at least make myself a sandwich/ drink etc.

TheDogHasEatenIt · 03/04/2018 10:18

The other thing i did, (with the HV approval) was to have her sleep on her front. Against all SIDS guidelines and i had a monitor (provided by my HV), that would sound if she stopped breathing, so i took as many safety precautions as i could. I am not recommending you do this lightly, but my baby was v. severe (turned out to have a serious medical problem that needed operating on), but it did mean she could occasionally keep a feed down.

Emrwood · 03/04/2018 10:46

Thanks for the advice everyone 😌

Agree with TheDog you definitely could do with staying a stretchy wrap. There may be a sling library near to you where you can try them.

Also, have a look on YouTube at the tiger in the tree hold Smile

JiltedJohnsJulie · 03/04/2018 11:29

*trying a stretchy wrap

@Smellybears thank you for recommending the wedghog, it works a dream 😬 my LG has finally grown out of the reflux (touch wood) but wind has still been a problem the wedghog was my last resort I wish I'd tried it sooner. Just thought I'd thank you and update you 😄😄

I would agree with the suggestion of keeping baby upright for 30 minutes after feeding.
I did that for my little one when I noticed she had reflux and it worked a treat.
