Car seats in Australia

I'm wanting to buy a forward facing car seat (the ones from birth to 4 years). We are moving to Australia next year and I am wondering what sort of regulations they have over there. Should I buy a cheapie to last for 12 months here or buy one I can use in Australia too?

i've just got back from visiting parents in oz and the car seat thingy is a nightmare...totally different from here. They have to be fitted by a specialist person and have all sorts of contraptions to hold them in (not just seatbelt). A lot of british seats don't conform with aussie standards so i would wait and buy one there

I'm pretty sure that you can't use a UK car seat in Australia or NZ, I think they have much stricter standards. Is there any chance you could borrow one instead? The trouble with buying a cheapie is that you could be involved in a car accident in the next 12 months and you would never forgive yourself if your child was injured because of a substandard car seat.

forgot to say you can hire them fairly cheaply too so you could do that until you decide to buy one...wrong time of day for the aussies to be on mn though....bump the post at 10pm tonight for better advice

The only difference I have come across is that they have a restraint strap going from the back of the car seat to the parcel shelf which is then attached to a bolt. My friend has one for her ds & it is almost identicle apart from that.

We brought dd's over here & use it (prob shouldn't but as far as I am concerned she is safe as it is just how it would be in the UK& I have only just realised it is not supposed to be used here)....it fits just as it would in the UK, same model of car too. It doesn't move at all. Saying that, she will very soon need the next stage, which as far as I can see just fit with the seatbelt & not top restraint, which I find odd....

I don't think you will find the type you need for Oz in the UK. I would buy what you need & the one you need here when you get here.

I did notice there was a strap attached to the car seat that attached to the car at the back - is that similar to isofix here?
