giving a 10 month a a plastic wallet (like the ones cards come in) to play with whilst he is sat on your lap and you are watching him?

nappyaddict · 08/05/2007 16:12

I wouldn't let him suck it too much as it will be full of pvc toxins. Under three toys should be made of special plastics that don't leak chemicals when they are chewed.

Other than that tell your mum to mind her own business. If she can't say anything nice she should button it.

Flamesparrow · 08/05/2007 16:34

Doesn't sound like fun with your mum.

How many children do you have Trice? I dread to think what DS has sucked

Weegle · 08/05/2007 16:36

she's being really supportive and encouraging then?! Not. I actually LIKE it when I see little ones playing with real objects, not just toys. And they seem to keep them entertained so much longer than regular toys.

crikey

your mum needs to get a grip

DD had no toys for a long while, just what she could grab out of the kitchen drawers...her favourite was an egg slicer ! she twanged it like a wee guitar!

DrNortherner · 08/05/2007 16:39

Do you mean cellophane rather than plastic?

maisemor · 08/05/2007 16:39

No you are doing nothing wrong. She is going to have a fit when your little one starts eating dirt and other interesting things he/she finds
Very inappropriate comment on your mother's behalf.

Kif · 08/05/2007 16:39

Say 'Oh, well he got bored of playing with the matches, and the lighter bit went all soggy from drool - this was the next best thing... '

tigerschick · 08/05/2007 16:43

My mum was a bit like this, tho thankfully not so blunt. She watched dd on Saturday afternoon ... watched her crawl out the patio doors and crash onto the concrete 8 inches down. She hasn't said much about my parenting since! Dd is fine, just a little bruise on her forehead.

You have my sympathies.

tigerschick · 08/05/2007 16:44

Just to make it clear - mum was the only one with dd at the time!
Read that back and it wasn't clear that I wasn't there!

flightattendant · 08/05/2007 17:09

DS got an open safety pin in his mouth once when he was about 10 months. He didn't swallow it thank god. But then I am totally irresponsible
No, I think a plastc wallet it safe enough.

Send her here, she can take a look at DS's massive collection of electrical cables - he's been obsessed for 2 years and is nearly 4 now - have had numerous fights with Mum about it but now she buys him new sockets and cables to play with, as she has totally given up! Only dodgy moment was plugging a bare-ended cable into a live extension lead, I'm sure he has a guardian angel after that. He's never done anything else dangerous since then, I think it was watching mummy turn purple and scream...{hmm}

nappyaddict · 08/05/2007 17:44

yes that's the word - cellophane!

eeek- Flight attendent, plug to bare end and plug to plug are both reallly dangerous combos. Not a good idea to have in existance never mind in a childs collection.
You may be watching when he plays with them but what happens if he loses one and some one else finds it and plugs it in.
If he MUST have plug to bare end etc please can you make sure its not wired to terminals in the pug, just a cable held in by the cable grip.
Alternatively I may have missed your drift and it's not as scarey as you made it sound. in whcih case sorry- Festival site electrician here has seen some very dodgy combos brought along by stall holders over the years.

I made my first lighting dimmer at about 12 or 13, took 2 trys as I blew the 1st one up having made a mistake in wireing it. Mum was furious.
