Duvets are NOT funny....

....now for the love of god, how do I persuade my two year old of this fact?!

He's always had sleeping bags, ever since he was a baby, but since he is growing like a weed and they cost an arm and a leg at his size, we would really like him to start using his duvet. However, every time I've attempted to introduce one, all we hear through the baby monitor is endless giggling as he flings himself around in it, on it, and under it, followed by hysteria as he gets hopelessly overtired and emotional. His feet are jammed up against the end of his current sleeping bags so I've just popped the duvet over him for his nap (which sounds like it's going ok so far) but any tips on removing the comedic potential of bed linen would be appreciated before we move onto the big one of bedtime.

Alternatively, will he be ok under a blanket? He has a fleece blanket for his naps (probably why the duvet is less of a stretch for these times), but I'm concerned that he'll get chilly during the night as it's quite thin.

When DS got too big for his sleeping bags we turned his bed from cot to cot bed. Then used a single duvet but on horizontally rather than lengthways down the bed, so that you can really tuck it under at both sides to prevent it coming off.

I also used a cut down pool noodle under the fitted sheet on the edge of the bed to prevent him rolling off!

Could you maybe leave it out downstairs during the day so he can ‘play’ with it until it becomes boring and normal? It sounds very sweet although I can appreciate quite annoying in real life!!

Spudlet · 15/03/2018 13:36

Ooooh, gawd, I don't know if I'm mentally prepared for the cot sides to come off yet Grin I have turned it sideways and tucked it right in though. He's currently asleep, albeit he has wriggled out from under the duvet and is horizontal across the cot instead 🙄

It is very sweet, it's just that it goes like so;

'Heh...hehe... teheehe... teehehhhehheeee...HAHAHAHAAHAAAAARRRRRGHHHGRRRRRAAAAAWAIIIILLLLLL' {Insert bang, crash, wallop noises as he flings himself around} and it gets a tad frazzling at that point. He was a dreadful sleeper as a baby and he's still not that great now, so I think we're wary of changing the magic formula of bedtime, IYSWIM. I will try bringing the duvet downstairs if it doesn't work this time, although I'm a bit worried that might increase the hilarity levels instead!

I'm with him.

Duvets are hilarious.

At least he's easily amused.

No. No! Don't encourage him! Grin

I blame myself. All that bloody peekaboo-ing..l

We’ve just eased 15m DD (couldn’t face shelling out for an 18-36 grobag when she’s going into a floor bed soon) into duvets by using a 0.5tog grobag under the duvet - so she was still a little contained. She’s fine just in her duvet now. She also went bananas when we initially tried straight from grobag to duvet.

Spudlet · 15/03/2018 13:45

Hmmm, I hadn't considered that. We do occasionally put a thin blanket over his sleeping bag on extremely cold nights, and he accepts that. That might work...?

How about a gro company “gro to bed” set? Keeps everything in place like a sleeping bag as it holds a pillow and duvet in place on the bed - might help the transition from sleeping bag? www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B01NGUE251/ref=mp_s_a_1_7_a_it?ref=plSrch&keywords=gro+to+bed+cot+bed+set&dpPl=1&dpID=51y%2BgdA7S7L&tag=mumsnetforum-21&ie=UTF8&qid=1521121545&sr=8-7

We just wait til DS has eventually passed out cold then go in and put duvet on properly.

Don't get me started on the pillow!

Spudlet · 15/03/2018 18:59

That gro-bed thingy looks like a possibility (wonder off i could replicate it with what we've got and some sewing....?).

Let us not speak of pillows. I already got a teddy bear to the face the other night - the last thing that boy needs is more ammunition Confused

If the duvet isn't working how about just chopping off the bottom of his current sleeping bag and putting warm socks on him. Prolongs the use of the sleeping bag!

Spudlet · 15/03/2018 21:33

It may come to that! I was hoping to eBay them or pass them onto my sister... hey ho. Planning on keeping on with the duvet at naptime for a week or so and if that works, we'll give it a go at bedtime. He's teething at the moment and anyway, it's going to be cold this weekend, so when it warms up again, I'll give it a go.

Thanks for all the advice / support Smile
