Baby gate/closed bedroom door ?

DS and I currently bed share on a mattress in his room (he's 15 months). I've always gone to bed with him but would like to start leaving him for an hour before I go up.

We tried a baby gate but that means I can't close the door when I go to bed.

I don't want to close the door on him while he's alone. It's not safe to have the door open.

Is there a solution? Would a retractable gate work?

Our ds has always had the door closed, no nightlight as don't like them. He's only ever slept upstairs. Never had any problem at all. The gate is on the outer part of the door, so it can close no problem at all. Also we have a video monitor, and when he was younger we checked on him regularly.

We couldn't fit a stairgate on our sons bedroom door and shut it. The door frames are to shallow.

I understand you wanting to keep the door open for him. We have the door open, and a stair gate about a metre outside his room. Would something like that work?

Could you have a stable door with the bottom like a trellis designs that he could see through? Might work whilst he's little

Thanks everyone - I really appreciate the input. I'm going to consider all options
(Green - stable door was my first thought 😊)

Replace door with curtain? 🤣
One with lining so it blocks out the light?
