This is a slightly different thread to what is usually posted in this topic, so forgive me as it's my first.

I work in a nursery and have done for five years, same one, small village so everything knows your business.

Now I'm fairly friendly with our parents, something which happens when you know them from out and about.

As I started there very young, parents have watched me grow up and a common joke/conversation is when 'wait till you have your owns' referring to the children.

My answer to that has always been. 'Oh I don't want children' before this used to be a personal choice as I loved looking after them but enjoyed handing them back as well. More recently this has become a health reason. I may never be able to.

A parent at the nursery mentioned this to me last week and she is very friendly with my boss and when she joked about it and asked why I just said that it's just something I didn't want. I then overheard her saying I was obviously in the wrong job and I didn't like working with kids!! This obviously upset me a great deal.

As a parent, what do you think? TIA

I know a midwife who never wanted her own. I think you can work with children without wanting your own. The relationship you have with children in your charge is different to the relationship you have with your own children. Being a mother of a child is so different. It doesn't mean you're in the wrong job.

She's a dick and her comment makes no sense. Working with children isn't related to having your own.

I worked with kids before I had my own. I would be awful at it now. Equally, I adore my son, I'm a good mum but the thought of working with kids makes me shiver - by her logic I probably shouldn't be a mum? She's just daft, ignore her

I think you just need to reply "Uh-huh" or "we'll see" rather than allowing people to make you divulge your personal thoughts/feelings.

The parents sound very rude!

I don’t think anything. If the parent isn’t a moron they will judge you on how you conduct yourself at work and whether her child is happy with you.

Your personal life and choices are irrelevant.

Idiot parent! Jo Frost, aka Super Nanny has no children.
