Baby cough

Hi - I have a 5 month old who has had a persistent cough for the last 6 weeks I have been to the doctor but because he is gone in himself and no temp they basically told me to stop wasting their time. He's eating, drinking, sleeping, weeing, pooing and smiling and no temp, few sneezes and a bit of snot but not much, but I don't think he should have a cough for so long?! It sounds likes there is mucus there but sometimes sounds dry, he also has fits of coughing in the night which aren't very nice but also in the day too, it doesn't seem to bother him but I'd like to get to the bottom of it. Any ideas?!

My little one is the same - she is 9 months. Started off as a chest infection but antibiotics did nothing apart from make her sick!

She now has an inhaler which seems to be helping. We also use saline drops at bed time, and lots of olbas oil. We have a plug in calpol thing too but I’m not sure it does much. For us, the olbas oil seems to do the best at decongesting. Have you tried some snuggle babe on his chest? And his feet - I have no idea why it works, but it does!

Snuffle babes every night, chest and feet! Also calpol plug in and saline spray, haven't tried olbas oil though so will give that a go - thanks! Did the doctor prescribe the inhaler? I am going back today so might ask about that, thanks for your help!

Also wondered if it might be related to teething, is that possible?! Or an allergy to his formula milk??

You get a special olbas oil for children. We sprinkle it all over her sheet and I do a little on her grow bag too. I notice a difference if I don’t do it!

Yeah the doctor prescribed it. They do say that excess snot etc can be linked to teething. She has been teething for what feels like 70 years so I’m not sure what’s linked and what’s not. I’ve wondered the same about allergies - mine has reflux too, which can apparently be linked to asthma.

I’ve spoken to three different pharmacists who have all said no to any cough bottles. I have been looking for a miracle cure!!

I went to the doctor today and he has sent us for an X-ray which will apparently show if there is an infection he has missed but I think it was just to shut me up :) didn't say much to my suggestion of allergies.

Bought some olbas oil so will see if that helps! Thanks for the tip!

So did the pharmacies say no to cough medicine? I've been using them too but didn't tonight just in case that's what you meant!

Xx

Hopefully the X-ray will at least put your mind at ease that there is at least no infection.

Yes they all say they are pretty much useless. That all they do is soothe the throat, in much the same way as a lukewarm drink would. They won’t do any harm but won’t do much good!
