Any parents with kids who have asthma?

I posted this in health section, but no response......

Any parents out there to offer me advice or help? My son is 4 and a few weeks ago after a flu/cold he developed this thing where he kind of take deep breaths or gasps for breath saying he can't breath. I took him to GP and she asked if he woke at night, but at the time he didn't and she listened to his breathing and thought he seemed fine. She thought it was a habit he developed after he got flu. When we went to Switzerland for skiing it suddenly went away (almost). On the way there and on the plane it got a lot worse, I got so scared and thought I would take him to doctor there for second opinion. But magically when we got there it disappeared, so I thought it was habit. But lately it has returned and he seems to wake at night and want water frequently (i think he thinks the water helps him breath). Anyway, he just had another attack (yesterday he had one too around 1am). This time it seems worse. He said his throat hurt and he couldn't breath and getting really worked up...which really freaked me out. I got him a lollipop to calm him down, which eventually worked and put on a cartoon. It took him about ten minutes to calm down...but he was coughing and getting so worked up and I was freaking. Of course these things happens when my husband travels...chicken pox, 40 fever or now asthma scare.....WHY OH WHY. Now my son is calm and watching show in bed...I am now freaking out worried. Im so upset. Tomorrow I will go GP first thing to get second option. We have insurance so I am hoping we can see private doctor to speed things up...

Anyone have young children with asthma? Any advice? How did you figure it out? Like what were the first symptoms? Anything to help calm me and cheer me up? Like it will be okay?

Yes, I went today to see a private doctor, who spent a lot of time with us and asked lots of questions, who thinks its viral infection and not asthma. Gave us a prescription for inhaler to use at night if needed and told to monitor him.

My ds had a chest infection this time last year and was diagnosed with viral induced wheeze afterwards. He was given a blue inhaler to take when required. Ever since then I have been trying to figure out if he had asthma. He was also drinking lots of water, it seemed to help him breath more easily. At nights I could see/hear he was breathing very heavily. One time he has a cough that would not stop for hours so I took him to the doctor but of course by the time he got there it had stopped. The doctor eventually prescribed my ds a brown inhaler to take everyday and now he is back to normal so I feel sure he had asthma.

Two different doctors had e told me to gradually take ds off the brown inhaler and each time exercise induced asthma has happened and also loud breathing at night and lots of water drinking. So I am currently thinking he does have asthma.

I am hoping my ds does not have asthma and its just the viral infection he has. Last night he slept through, thankfully and we did not need to use the inhaler! I have it just in case if he has another episode at night, but thankfully he did not.

My 7 year old has asthma. I know a couple of people wh are now in their 60's who were sent to Switzerland to help their asthma although I'm not sure what it is about Switzerland that helps!

My DC had an asthma attack aged 1 and the gp put him on a nebulizer and gave him a blue inhaler. He got a brown inhaler aged 4 I think and was officially diagnosed with asthma aged 5.
