Sterilising bottles

Should I still be sterilising 15month DS bottles?
He is still on one bottle at night with warm cows milk before bed. He loves it and takes a lot of comfort from it so happy to let him keep it for now but the sterilising is a massive pain! Seems counterproductive when I see some of the things he puts in his mouth/licks 😂

Personally I didn't bother as soon as DD was off formula. Just made sure it was well washed. So much hassle!!

InDubiousBattle · 06/03/2018 13:44

No, I only ever sterilised for formula, gave up when they went onto cows milk.

God no!

Hey not main issue but just to say nhs advice is to try to phase out bottle by 12 months so they’re using a free flow sippy cup that doesn’t require sucking. I think it’s to do with tooth decay and speech development. You get them them free in Scotland (maybe elsewhere?) just before 4 months as that’s when you can start to use them. I’m sure it’s not big deal at 15 months but just thought I’d mention it in case it’s helpful.

Yea he uses sippy cups during the day and we brush his teeth last thing. We will phase out this last bottle eventually (introducing supper just now!) but figure as long as he is getting his teeth brushed before bed, no harm. Just this last bedtime drink he refuses out a cup and he is so cute with it - goes all floppy and cuddly, playing with his hair and just switching off for the night. Also talks for Scotland 😂

I stopped sterilising once my ds stopped having formula (he was on toddler milk for a while). I never found it a hassle though doing something essential for your child should never be a hassle.
Also he had milk in bottles until he dropped having milk full stop, we made sure his teeth were brushed. It was easier because of making the formula.

Really HappyMummy? we all muddled through this journey being parents best we can without someone throwing smug comments like that to make you feel shit.

I stopped sterilising after 6 months! By that point dd was rolling around on the floor licking/putting everything in her mouth so really did not see the point. Hot soapy water and she’s never been ill. A few germs does them the world of good.

Once my daughter ate half a live snail from the garden and lived to tell the tell started bunging everything in a dishwasher from about 12 months. Got 3 healthy teenagers now.

NHS guidance is up to 12 months. I might still sterilise after that if using formula, but if just cows milk then definitely no need. It does somehow seem wrong not sterilising bottles though doesn't it lol.

newmoney

It was the loud crunching that gave it away........she is vegan now....wonder if it’s related :)

Lazypuppy · 07/03/2018 17:42

I thought you only needed to sterilise if it haf formula in it because of the bacteria etc in it (why it has to be made with water of a certain temp).

I'm breastfeeding, and giving expressed milk in bottles and instructions say they only need to be washed with hot soapy water, no sterilising needed

TeddyIsaHe · 07/03/2018 20:06

Lazy oh I don’t know. My midwife told me to sterilise until 6 months and to only sterilise the pump once a day and keep it in the fridge when not in use.

Lazypuppy · 08/03/2018 14:42

@TeddyIsaHe instructions on the pump said i just had to sterilise before first use then just wash, its just milk no difference to cows milk etc, and can be cleaned the same.

If i do sterilise anything i just cold water sterilise, quick and easy

Thissameearth · 08/03/2018 15:22

There’s so much mixed information re pump. Mine’s (medela) says to sterilise once a day but that could just be manufacturer caution. I do it as my daughter’s under 6 months and I figure we’re meant to sterilise bowls etc if weaning before 6 months. I pump sporadically and never more than once a day so I put in dishwasher after use them steam sterilise it next time I use it doesn’t take long but if I was doing it more frequently then obvs I wouldn’t want to do any more than what was necessary to be safe.
