Help - nappy leaking at sides during the night

Oh wise Mumsnet, font of all knowledge, please help!

My 5 month old DS started to sleep on his side about a month ago. Since then, he leaks through his nappy more often than not. It generally comes out by his waist/hip on the side he is lying on, although occasionally by the leg cuff.

Initially I thought it was a capacity/absorbency issue, but it’s not. Last night he leaked by 1am, and his nappy was barely wet. It seems to be doing with his position and the direction his urine runs in.

I have tried

  1. Going up a size and using a higher absorbency
  1. Acti-fit pants and Pampers Baby Dry
  1. Other brands, such as Tesco
  1. Putting a second nappy over the top

Nothing works! He’s waking up damp and I’m sick of washing his sleeping bag every single day.

Any tips??

I've just had this a handful of times and it's been my shoddy nappy doing skills. Sounds like you have had a lot of practice so not that.

Could you put a puppy pad under him until it's sorted to save bed changing?

Sorry @Lemondrop99 it's actually the Little Bloom nappies that have the Velcro fastening. Here's a link:

LittleBloom Baby Cloth Washable Reusable Nappy Pocket Diaper BAMBOO, Fastener: Hook-Loop, Pattern 58, Without Insert https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00KG5RR64/ref=cmswwrcppapi_.vhOAb08W7HVW

They're very cost-effective if you only want to use them for covers. Wink

Thanks Nell. Luckily the clothes and sleeping bag seem to absorb it, so it hasn’t got as far as the seats and mattress. That would be even more annoying!

Brill, thanks for the link Cuppa.

I've just had this problem with my 1 year old - moving a size up in vests solved the problem!

I second the Motherease airflow wraps which are brilliant. We use them over totsbots bamboozles and they are so absorbent. The totsbots peenut wrap is also good and has Velcro instead of poppers. Also recommend vest extenders if you are using vests with poppers overnight. You can find them cheap on amazon.

Hi @Lemondrop99 I wanted to ask if the nappy cover actually worked please hun if possible as I have the same issue with my 5 year old son who is not trained yet

Sophielagirr · 27/10/2025 22:22

Hi @Lemondrop99 and @Sanzarar I am having exactly the same issue at the moment so I wanted to ask what worked for you please? Thanks so much.

Sanzarar · 28/10/2025 00:19

@Sophielagirr Hi it worked at night I used to put a nappy cover over the normal nappy and it helped as the nappy cover was waterproof it also helped keep the nappy in place

Sophielagirr · 28/10/2025 06:35

Thanks for getting back @Sanzarar is there any particular cover you'd recommend. Me and my washing machine are grateful 😁

Sanzarar · 28/10/2025 07:43

@Sophielagirr Hi I used to get the ones from boots its called the reusable nappy and it has a nice thin microfibre lining from the outside it is waterproof and has velcro at the waist for adjustment you can wash these in the machine xx

Sophielagirr · 28/10/2025 10:13
