9 week old with a cold - any suggestions?

Hi, my 9 week old seems to have come down with a cold/cough. Won’t settle when laid on his back as he just keeps coughing and I can hear his little blocked nose. He’s usually a good sleeper but last night just kept screaming. He’s now asleep on my chest...

Can anyone advise if it would be worth me taking him to GP? I’m a first time mum so this is all new to me. What Can I do/give my son to make him feel better? He’s definitely not himself as he seems sleepy when usually he’s very alert and content.

I had a pretty bad cold, but fortunately my 7/8 week old at the time didnt get it.

i had my 8 week check and dr advised that with little ones if any concerns they'd rather see the baby and not to be worried about seeing dr unecessarily.

General advice is to raise cot/moses basket to aid breathing and saline drops for nose

If he has a temperature or seems to have difficulty breathing, definitely take him to the doctors.

To relieve congestion you can use Sterimar Baby (gentle nasal spray, it’s just saline solution with nothing else in it) plus the snot sucker. My DS hates it but it does work!

You could also try a humidifier in the bedroom (if you have one) or a bowl of hot water by the radiator, as the steam helps to unblock the airways for children as well as adults. I’ve been putting a few drops of Olbas oil for children in the water as well.

Oh and keep him hydrated, keep offering feeds, maybe more often than you might do otherwise.

We used to find that the plug in menthol things help at night- as long as you don't mind your house stinking of menthol!

Oh yes the snot sucker - works miracles!

If you bf squirt some up his nose (like saline but better).
Let him feed often.
Take him in a steamy bathroom.
Skin to skin really works to reduce a high temperature.

If breathing is a concern straight on to the doctors. And if you're really worried in general speak to GP or HV - mine who wont see adults for 3 weeks will always make time for a small baby.
