Going out in the snow!

I have a 5 week old.

So, about 5cm of snow for us overnight. Its -5 outside but with windchill its -10.

I have barely any food in the house and I'm fairly low on formula too. Thursday is shopping day usually! The nearest supermarket is 25 mins walk or 5 min drive away.

Online delivery slots are all full til Sat or being cancelled left right and centre.

Do I risk driving in the snow with my baby in the back (I only passed my test in Dec, so would be my first time as well) or should I wrap us both up really warm and walk? I'm thinking hot water bottle in the pram and rain cover.

If you really have to go out I would walk.
Yes it's longer but driving might be unsafe anyway, you'll be nervous as you're not used to it. Plus the snow on top of that. Plus baby might cry and that's very distracting.
Do you have a sling for baby?

blueskyinmarch · 01/03/2018 11:01

Don't drive. Driving in snow is horrible even for experienced drivers. Wrap up well and walk. I wouldn't put a hot water bottle in though. Just wrap your DC up in layers and with the hood up and rain cover on they will be snug. The fresh air will do you both good.

Don't drive. It's scary on ice and snow. Do you have a little shop or petrol station where you could pick up enough to tide you over?

We are going out for a walk. I’m putting mine in the sling with lots of layers and a hat and a snood. He is a bit older but I wouldn’t worry about going for a 25 min walk to the shops!

I know people say it all the time, but think of the Nordic countries, they sleep outside in temps lower than this!

Just make sure babe is well fed before you leave, bring the pram inside first to warm it up and make sure you use lots of layers.

Even using the rain cover helps keep warm as it stops the wind.

DetectiveDog · 01/03/2018 11:04

I’m a bit of a nervous driver so if it was me then I’d walk in those circumstances too. The cold wouldn’t worry me, just make sure you’re both wrapped up and you’ve got sensible shoes!

Fadingmemory · 01/03/2018 11:06

I would walk. Just wrap up well and tread carefully.

owltrousers · 01/03/2018 11:07

Thanks everyone!

I do have a sling but it leaves his little face exposed and the snow is actually coming down so think he might get wet if I used that.

So, rain cover on the pram, lots of layers. I have just fed him a big warm bottle so think I'll get the pram in now to warm up.

Def don't do the hot water bottle I have a lovely scar on my leg where my mum did the same to me , and it burnt through the layers of blankets I would dress baby in layers and layers of blankets if going in pram add the rain cover , when at the supermarket take the cover back and remove some of the layers so that he/she can adjust to indoors temp .

icantdothis2017 · 01/03/2018 11:40

I wouldn't do hot water bottle .

Vest, sleep suit , light cardigan , snow suit and a blanket is what I used to dress dd in v cold weather .
Rain cover will keep the wind of to

LauraO1905 · 01/03/2018 11:52

Can you get grocery shopping delivered where you are? I'd do an online order and stay home all toasty

thenightsky · 01/03/2018 11:55

Walking is safer than driving. I would not use a sling though. I'd be too worried about slipping on icy pavements and landing on my baby.

Cutesbabasmummy · 01/03/2018 12:06

LauraO1905 The OP cant get a slot until Saturday and she's running out of formula and food

demirose87 · 01/03/2018 12:11

I would wrap up warm and walk. Sometimes it's unavoidable to not go out. I wouldn't use a hot water bottle though. Snowsuit, hat, a few blankets and raincover pulled over and you should be fine.

Trooperslane2 · 01/03/2018 12:17

Prime now?
Not sure if even they're getting through.
Could a neighbour or friend go for you?
I've been driving for 25 years and I have no intention of getting the car out any time soon, though our main roads are ok-ish.
We've probably had about 8 inches Glasgow

LauraO1905 · 01/03/2018 12:42

Oh yea, didn't see that part!

Is definitely advocate wrapping up warm and walking then, rather than driving.

Hope you manage to stock up xx

PrincessHairyMclary · 01/03/2018 12:49

Some local taxi companies are picking up grocerys etc for vulnerable people in my area. No charge for delivery just for the goods you ask for. If you look on Facebook you might find something similar in your area.

owltrousers · 01/03/2018 13:00

We made it out! Wrapped up really warm with tons of blankets and DS slept the whole time. Its really beautiful and quiet out so glad we went! Only mistake was to wear fingerless gloves Shock

llangennith · 01/03/2018 13:50

Glad you made it OP but...fingerless gloves😱

justanotheruser18 · 01/03/2018 20:26

Fingerless gloves? Nooooo. Fagin life. It was bitter out there. Glad your trip was successful.
