a friend's rather headstrong 3 yr old refuses to use the potty. she asked me for advice because my 2 year old trained so easily but i think that was just luck. not sure what to suggest but i know she used the contented little baby book when he was a baby and just wondered if anyone has any experience of this book as i was thinking of suggesting it.

I used GF's principles as laid out in From Contented Baby to Contented Toddler (or something like that, her second book anyway), together with a bit of bribery, when ds was 2y10m and in two days he was going to the toilet on his own without accidents. So I would recommend GF's advice!

Also, if your friend's child refuses to use the potty, then why not go straight to using the toilet with a special seat?

I got this book as a guide and was really sceptical to start with, especially as I am not a GF follower at all. It was the only book in shop on topic at the time.

BUT DD was 24 months when I tried it, following her rough advice and ideas - not fully at all, and not the preparation bit. Just straight into Day 1 - with our own modifications. DD was fully PT'ed within the first 2 or 3 days

Again, no idea if the book worked as such or if it was just good timing. I did frind the 7 signs of being ready useful though, and the general ideas.

Not sure about the potty refusal - has she tried more than one style? DD much prefered her potty chair as it was higher and more confortable.

sounds like it could be just what she needs. thanks!

Can I just ask what are the 7 signs of being ready are? My DS is 2 + 4 months (today!) and I want to potty train him with as little stress as possible!

I'm with Hulababy on this one - bought the book but used it as general advice really and didn't follow it word for word and am not a GF follower either. My ds was 3yr5m before he was trained, previously refused to use the potty, cried if I put him on the toilet. In the end I set two weeks aside, stayed at home (well when possible), made him wear normal pants (and top only) in the house, trainer pants were only used for car journeys (and as soon as we returned home they were off!) and I also bought him a potty chair. Within 2 weeks he was dry/clean during the day with no accidents and within a month, dry at night too. My advice to your friend would be to forget the books, be firm, ignore the accidents and give loads of praise when he does manage to go on the potty. HTH

like some of the others I used GF for some basic guidance and had a lot of success, he was trained by 2, and has never had any accidents since the early days. BUT it took a few weeks rather than a week (maybe as we did not follow it to the letter!) a top tip came from his nursery though. they said once you are potty training, don't use pullups or they will never learn. at least in pants they will feel wet.

Yes, it took my son a couple of weeks (he was 2 and 7 months) of wearing nothing on his bottom for the first day, then just pants for a week or so. I did follow Gina, but never do her to the letter. Agree about pull ups though. Took son straight out of trainer pants when he referred to them as his big boy nappy.
He's 3 now and still not dry at night. That is supposed to follow on naturally isn't it. How long does it take??

I'm a long way from potty training - my dd is only 8 months..........however I had already imagined that pull-ups would be a no-no.......how would the realise they were wet if there was no moisture??!! I'm in the US where it seems they don't even try to potty train until the child is past 3 years........I think we'll be trying a bit before that assuming dd is ready. I'm going to buy the Gina book on my next trip home so we're prepared when the time comes. If it weren't for this thread I wouldn't have realised Gina had done this book - so thank you ladies in advance!!

I have just read the book and am going to use it but not in one week rather over a couple of months. My daughter is 19 months but already goes into 'special' corner to poo (in nappy) and meets 7 signs and language v developed. Friend used it when daughter was 2.5 after 2 unsuccessful attempts and swears by it. But only really suitable if you look after kids yourself otherwise you have to fit in with childcare arrangements. The section about 2 faceclothes, one wet and one dry to explain the difference between wet/dry sounds good in practice. Like other GR books suggesting using for general guidance not becomeing a slave 2 it!
