Help! How are we supposed to put stair gates on these (pic attached)?

Is there another solution???

Maybe something like this...you would need to buy the extension so that it could go from your wall, and wrap around to the other side of the bannister...

Can you just put stair gates on the run and not allow unsupervised access to the landing?

BrazzleDazzleDay · 28/02/2018 16:30

We had similar in last house, we just put gates on the living room and dc bedroom.

Stair gates on top of stairs arent very safe tbh

Ive always had one on the dcs bedroom and then supervised on landing

ThereIsIron · 28/02/2018 16:42

You can't. Put it across the bedroom door.

My stairs are in my living room so we had the same issue at the bottom, we used a retractable one like someone has posted, attached to the wall on one side with the clip/hooks attached. to the wooden post on the other

If I was putting at the top I would put it on the first step down up against the riser of the top step though because there's no bar along the bottom of them so if a small child leaned on it they could slip under it iyswim?

PoofShazam · 28/02/2018 17:09

Attach the main part where I've marked green

Attach the bottom hooks where I've shown blue and the top hooks further up on your newel post (out of shot)

The bottom of the gate need to sit on the step I've marked yellow (two down) flush against the riser of the second to last step

Attached this time!

If you put a stairgate two stairs down its should be fairly easy to climb/fall over the top.

PoofShazam · 28/02/2018 17:34

Our retractable one is a lot taller than a standard one, I think because it's intended for this purpose.

I couldn't step over ours from the step above (I know because I once tried and failed spectacularly!!) so I don't think a toddler could fall over it but you'd need to measure to make sure.

Janek · 28/02/2018 17:50

Oh, okay, i was picturing the one we had, which you definitely could have fallen over!

eurochick · 28/02/2018 19:44

I would also suggest a retractable one.

namechange5000 · 28/02/2018 19:52

We had to screw a baton of wood against the bannister to attach a stair gate too. Could you attach a baton to the top of the right hand side in the photo? Something like the photo attached (not my photo or my house!)

gigi556 · 28/02/2018 20:10

@namechange5000 I don't think that would work due to bannister and door frame on the other side but I like your thinking :)

namechange5000 · 28/02/2018 20:27

Yeah, I see what you mean!
Perhaps you should cut off a chunk of bannister, screw the other half into the door frame, put a baton on the opposite side!
Or just don’t bother with a stair gate?! Wink

BunloafAndCrumpets · 28/02/2018 20:31

I'd screw a baton onto the bannister as name suggested and then use a babydan retractable gate attached to baton. The end of it can attach to the door frame at 90 degrees to the insertion point of the gate. They're great gates.

By way of an update....

This took an entire day for DP to build! And still not finished as need to put some timber on the bottom to block the gap....

It's like ours . We have an extra tall gate on the step below, and use a Y spindle fitting (you can buy these separately)
