Anything I give to dd goes through her!

So dd is 11 months old soon. She's always been okay with food but I won't give her proper solids yet as she has no teeth. Instead I give her porridge, purees etc. If I do give her solids it's very finely cut things.

Anyway, today, everything I give her she just seems to have it out instantly the other end but she's still hungry. I'm trying to give her things that bind her up now a bit but is this normal? She was the same a few days ago and I keep making sure she's hydrated etc. She relies more now on solids than milk but I'm a bit concerned about her.

I don't really think she's teething. There's no signs and when you run your finger across her gums there's nothing :(

I just want to add - it's not diarrhea. It's like sludge yuck and brown in colour. Yesterday she did what I call logs but today like mud and sludge

Give her proper food and see how she gets on.

You don’t need to wait for teeth. Just give solid food.

I am, I just give it her very mashed up. I don't feel comfortable giving her proper food until she has some teeth

Just give her proper food. You’ll be surprised.

However, her nappies sound exactly like my children at 6 months ish when I first started them on food.

PotteringAlong · 28/02/2018 15:33

She doesn’t need teeth for solid food.

Twocatsonebaby · 28/02/2018 15:33

She's been on them for 4 months though :( she's usually okay just the past few days on and off things are going through her

Does she have a temperature?

Twocatsonebaby · 28/02/2018 15:37

No, she's all okay. She was a bit sick last night but she bounced around after me giving her some water and it just all came up. I was worried she has a bug as she didn't seem herself but I think she was just tired as it was around bedtime for her.
Could it be a virus or something?

OP posts:
ShowOfHands · 28/02/2018 15:40

Probably a mild virus.

Regardless, give her proper food. My eldest didn't have teeth until 13 months and she ate normal food from 6 months. We never mashed a thing.

PsychoPumpkin · 28/02/2018 15:46

At 11 months she’s ready for solid solids. Those gums are hard enough to cope with non-puréed food.
My youngest didn’t get a tooth until 13 months but was eating pretty much what we ate from 6 months onwards, cut into finger food sized pieces.

Twocatsonebaby · 28/02/2018 15:48

I'm just so worried she will choke. We've noticed recently she's chewing pea sized foods we give her but I just worry so much over it. I don't get baby led weaning. I really don't. It just frightens me.

Might be due to teething. Or there’s something called toddler diarrhoea that I vaguely remember hearing about when mine were little - if I remember correctly, their increased physical activity levels speeded up their digestion leading to diarrhoea - but it was temporary.

EveryoneTalkAboutPopMusic · 28/02/2018 15:49

Sounds like it could be a milk virus. Probably best not to try to bung her up but just let it take its course. If you are worried about dehydration, just let her have her usual milk on demand and make sure she has water available with her meals.

Try her with some high water foods too such as melon, soup, brocolli, cauliflower and jelly though not necessarily altogether Grin

Is there a reason that you are worried about offering finger foods?

PsychoPumpkin · 28/02/2018 15:52

Babies are so much more capable than we give them credit for, honestly, give her half a banana, for a start, it creates a surprisingly solid poo, but also, it’s a comfortable start to baby led weaning as it turns to mush in the mouth.

EveryoneTalkAboutPopMusic · 28/02/2018 15:52

Just seen your post on choking. If you are worried about this, I’d recommend going on a Paediatric First Aid Course. There are also videos on YouTube of what to do if baby chokes. It’s particularly important as they can, and do, choke on purees.

I weaned my first on purees long before I’d hesrd of BLW. Even in the bad old days, it was perfectly normal for a 10 month old with no teeth to chew away on toast, sandwiches, cheese on toast and fruit.

EveryoneTalkAboutPopMusic · 28/02/2018 15:53

*mild virus

NameChangeDestroyer · 28/02/2018 15:54

If you're anxious about choking what about a first aid course? Children centres often run them cheap. Baby led weaning wasn't for me either btw but my dd was definitely on whole foods by then like chopped fruits

Twocatsonebaby · 28/02/2018 15:58

I know the first aid and I did try BLW and she did end up gagging and I confused it for choking and immediately got her up to get the food out as I panicked. Especially now I'm on my own. With her dad (ex dp) was here he was totally calm and in control of it. It just freaks me out because I can't understand the concept of it. You need teeth to chew right so it doesn't make sense in my head. I feel like an awful mom :(

Could you try giving her mushy "proper" food? Things like scrambled eggs, risotto, mashed potato, macaroni cheese, etc. Basically foods that she would be able to grind down with her gums?

DS had "sludge" poops when he was eating puréed food but since he's been having more and more "proper" food, they become more solid.

AssassinatedBeauty · 28/02/2018 16:03

You don't need teeth to chew. Hard gums are fine for chewing, just try letting her chew your finger and see what you think.

Half a banana is perfect, or other soft fruit like pear (quartered), or avocado. Toast with various toppings too.

It's really unusual to withhold solid food for so long.

MyKingdomForBrie · 28/02/2018 16:06

My dd still doesn’t really have solid poo.. she does on and off but not often. I never thought of it as an issue as she’s happy and healthy and growing!

QueenNefertitty · 28/02/2018 16:10

I second what everyone else has said. Solid foods and self feeding are really important for children's development. I found BLW terrifying for the first couple of months (started at 6 months). By 8 months, I was totally relaxed and DS was gumming everything from steak to chicken curry to aubergine "fries" to scones with butter .... I notably gave him lamb stifado at 9 months, to much consternation on here (where everyone felt it was wasted on a Baby Grin)

And I was absolutely terrified every single mealtime. You just have to get on with it. It's part of parenting.

Honestly - if there are no "solid solids" going in- why would you expect any to come out? Mush going in will only get mushier....

user1495443009 · 28/02/2018 16:17

Is she still having enough milk?

I had that with my daughter when she was little it was after a virus. I thought she had become intolerant and started trying cutting on certain foods and milk. Then I decided to give her milk again and the problem went
