Hi,
We are exepcting our first child in about 3 weeks from now, and want to use cloth nappies but dont know which to choose? We like the look of the Tots Bots, but would like to know if anyone has used the size 2 from birth or are they a little too big? Are also considering Terries, but how good are they at containing leaks? (thinking of breast feeding). Would be grateful for any advice / recommendations.

Hi,

We are expecting our first child in about 3 weeks and want to use cloth nappies, but are unsure of which to choose. We like the look of the Tots Bots, but were wondering if the size 2 can be successfully used from birth? We would also consider using Terries, however are they good at containing leaks? (Considering breastfeeding)

We would appreciate any advice / recommendations.

I would recommend motherease one size, for a good basic nappy that is fool proof, rarely leaks and washes like a dream, I used muslin folds for early days with motherease rikki wrap

I found terries usless and bulky. Especially for heavy wetters. With the booster pads in, ds looked like he had a pillow wrapped round his bum!!

I have got the bambino mio nappies....they do a great birth to potty pack. I used the miosoft covers to start with...they are really robust. I also use the miolite covers as they have a more generous leg cuff (if you have a baby with chunky legs like my ds2!!) and more waterproof.

I used the kooshies all in ones for dd and they were useless....dont buy them!!! they split within a week and I had to take them all back.

Cotton bottoms covers are not that great either. I used them for dd after I took the kooshies back. I have learnt now and use the bambino mio covers as they are the best for my ds2.

Everyone is different though and it may take you a while to find a cover that suits you the best.

Bambino mio also do trial packs of one nappy and one cover so you dont have to fork out loads if they dont suit. bambino mio website for you to look at

Hope you find what works for you. And good luck with baby!!!

i used disposal for about 8 weeks to get breatsfeeding established (think this is recommended) then switched to tots bots size 1 which we used for about 6months then moved onto to tots bots size 2. I managed to pick up brand new ones second hand from the nappylady website

We have used Bimbles since the start with either a Nature Baby or Modern Baby wrap during the day which gives a nice neat fit. After a few night time leaks we then started using a larger Motherease wrap at night and have had no problems since. They dealt with all that first breastfed poo with no problems at all.

However DD was a big girl (10lbs 10oz) and has continued in the same vein and we are finding they are getting too small at only 7 weeks (she nows weighs around 15lbs) so the 18lb weight limit given is a bit generous I think. Although to be fair if your baby reached 18lbs at a later age the fit would be different so may just be an issue if they are 'chunky'!

We tried both the Bumble (one-size version of the Bimble) and the Tots-Bots Size 2 at birth with DD and they were both far too big and so we opted for the Bimble as opposed to Tots Bots Size 1 as they were cheaper and we knew that we wouldn't need them to have a lengthy life span (did expect a bit longer than 7 weeks to be fair).

I had a number of bad experiences with Kooshies and then bought Motherease One Size Dry and Air Flow wraps (with poppers NOT aplix). Very happy with these, although we do dry them in our machine for softness. On holidays we use Moltex OKO disposibles. Decided recently to try Nature Boy/Girl disposibles from Waitrose but my daughter had horrific nappy rash within 2 days...

We used Nappy Nation no fold terry plus Sam I am breathable pants - these were the only ones we bought and worked beautifully! The nappies look complicated but aren't really and dry very quickly. Designed by mums and made in the UK! Come in two sizes. Got first lot from twinkleontheweb (v helpful site) and second lot from eco-babes, again v help and think they do a trial pack of various nappies you can hire plus have local agents you can speak to at home.

Hi liz

I've used washables on all three of mine, and have now settled on terries (or muslins for very little babies). I use motherease velcro wraps, or nature's babies poppered ones from Kittykins .

The adjustable wraps are now so good that I've given up doing traditional terry folds and just fold them into a pad and the wrap holds it all in place.

Re leaks: all nappies, including disposables, will leak runny bfed baby poo in the early days, as their legs are so skinny, but this will improve quickly as they plump up. With the terries a runny/large poo will inevitably end up all over the wrap, however you fold the nappy, but IME less likely to leak out onto the clothes than with disposables. Just make sure you have enough wraps.

Have you tried The Nappy Lady ? It's the most comprehensive nappy information site I've encountered. I've not used their advice service as I started nappying before the current cloth nappy boom got underway, but I understand it's very good.

I used kissaluvs and tots (size 1) with rikki wraps. The tots did make her look like Michelin man for a while (she was 5lb9). Never got any leaks that got past the wrap though.

When she was 3 months we went camping and she wore disposables and pooh went all the way up her back. I was totally horrified as I'd never experienced poo getting past the nappy before!
