Does this mean newborn needs feeding?

Hi all.

My LO is almost two weeks old and doing well. Healthy and feeding well.

Usually, it's clear that he's hungry; normal cues etc.

But sometimes, for example during the night tonight, he lies in his Moses basket and can just make noises for a while rather than crying. The noises are like cackles - can't think of a better way to describe them and they don't sound as though he's necessarily grumpy or anything. And sometimes he does fall back to sleep.

Would these noises still indicate hunger? Or should we let him be and go back to sleep?

Thanks.

My newborn also makes this noise, like a crackly intake of breath, and my first child did it too. I leave them to it, it's usually when they've stirred slightly and are changing position

My 6mo does a little cackle when hungry, mostly when about to be fed (waiting for me to unclip the bra!). But when smaller she would also do at other times when she needed feeding. Never asleep/ half-asleep though!

Mine were all a bit grunty. I would leave them to it but ifbthey were hungry, it was a definite cry.

We call it her ' Sheldon laugh', if you know what that sounds like 😊

My son was a very noisy sleeper as a newborn (and still is at 13 months). I think you'd definitely know if she was hungry. I'd leave her be if she's not upset.

If he goes back to sleep then he's not hungry. If he does this, fusses a bit and then starts wanting food then it's like an early warning system. Mine never got to the screaming stage, not because I was super mum and on top of feeding, but because he was never not latched, feeding or not! I think that's why we introduced a dummy.

Are you happy with the wee and poo output OP? A hungry baby will actually go back to sleep if it’s very hungry and sleepy, but if you have a good nappy output and baby is bright and alert at times this shouldn’t be a worry. Crying is usually the last cue.

Awww those noises are so cute! My baby does those all the time- I am guessing they are practising for when they learn to talk
I let mine go back to sleep as I am normally sooo tired! I am so irresponsible aren't I?

He's a happy baby and is putting on weight and feeding and poohing like crazy.
I usually wait for a winge at night to wake up and feed- I am human and tired and if I wait till the last cue then tough!

You could of course just test by sticking a finger near his mouth when he does this. Then you will know

flumpybear · 26/02/2018 15:47

Always try a quiet 'ssshhhhuuuuussshhh' or ten before resorting to getting out of bed

demirose87 · 26/02/2018 15:52

If it seems like he's getting more and more worked up and not settling, then you could try feeding him. Bur if he seems content then I would leave him a while to see if he will go back to sleep.

They make weird noises, don't they? It was like sleeping on a farm for the first few weeks. Really funny because we didn't expect it at all!

If baby is hungry he'll cry eventually Smile
