What would you expect them to do? Procedure etc?

He fell quite badly and was bleeding.

I asked if they could carry my bag to the car for me because I had my daughter with me too and they did xx

Given the accident you've described, I don't think what they've done was particularly poor but it wasn't great either. A bit of first aid would have been nice of them - somewhere to sit, ice, a plaster etc. Follow up doesn't seem appropriate given the minor nature and the supermarket's lack of culpability.

It can be a huge shock the first time they get hurt though, so I appreciate why you're a bit taken aback.

crunchymint · 22/02/2018 23:50

They are not legally required to have a first aider. Anyone who is not qualified should not be giving first aid unless an emergency.

Once when my dd was little, she was toddling about (as the trolleys had no restraining belts so I ddn't think they were safe) and she managed to fall and, because she managed to cut herself and there was quite a bit of blood, then frighten herself - they offered her lots of chocolate Grin
It's just good customer relations. That said, this was years ago. Sadly, in this age of ambulance chasers, businesses now have to be much more careful about 'saying sorry' as it suggests it was their fault ~ which it doesn't sound as if this was in any way.

nursy1 · 22/02/2018 23:51

My daughter fell on the stairs in Halfords and cut her scalp quite badly. Tbh it was another customer who helped most ( she produced a sanitary towel to stem the bleeding). Halfords seemed to have a tin of plasters. Halfords wanted to put her in the accident book but I just needed to get out, put her in the car and get her to A and E so ignored them. It would not enter my head to sue, unless an assistant deliberately tripped her.

PickAChew · 22/02/2018 23:51

Make sure you're ok and it wasn't their fault.

tvhearts · 22/02/2018 23:54

Oh god, I'm definitely not an ambulance chaser and am in no way planning to sue!!! They were just a little indifferent to it all and I just wondered if this was normal or if I'm being overprotective mother haha xx

Mine fell in M&S last week and they were lovely. Offering me ice lollies and stuff (she split her lip). I was mortified, she'd tripped over my foot as I was paying. But I wouldn't have expected anything at all as I was there and as her parent was the best person to take care of her.

When I worked with kids, only the qualified First Aider could give any kind of help at all.
Also a trip with some bleeding may be scary, but it is not a serious accident. I would ignore what I was told by a manager for someone having a serious accident/unconscious, but not simply for a child that tripped and needed a bit of TLC.

How about a few wipes and a plaster? Hi about showing the parent a box of first aid stuff?

HeyRoly · 23/02/2018 14:49

I would expect a first aider to be called but wouldn't expect a follow up phone call or anything like that.

I'd expect them to expect me to handle the rest, as a parent. It sounds like it was just an accident and no liability on the supermarket's part at all.

Ilovewillow · 23/02/2018 14:53

Not entirely the same but I fell on ice in a supermarket car park last year. As it was next to the blue badge parking I informed a member of staff. They took my details and offered first aid which I declined. No other action although they did send me some flowers a few days later as an apology. Never know your lock! I hope you're little one is ok!

Gumbo · 23/02/2018 15:03

When DS was 3 he managed to split his cheek open on a price sign that was sticking out from one of the shelves in a supermarket! It bled a lot and I asked for a first aider (which they couldn't produce - although until I saw this thread I didn't know they didn't need to have one..) They finally drummed up the manger who was quite sweet and took him into the office and cleaned up his face - and more importantly, got a big bag of chocolate buttons off the shelf which was utterly magical for DS and he still talks about it many years later

Fortunately his cheek didn't scar, but I was quite surprised by how unprepared they seemed for any sort of medical incident. Still, I suppose like PP have said it's a low risk environment... although I'd still assume they must have things like happen this fairly often!

KriticalSoul · 23/02/2018 15:12

no idea about smaller stores, but Tesco you would be offered the first-aider.

crunchymint · 23/02/2018 15:36

Tulip They are unlikely to do that unless they have a qualified first aider. It could lead to them being sued if there was an issue e.g. the cut got infected. Unfortunately ambulance chasers have made companies wary.

BakedBeans47 · 23/02/2018 23:56

I ran over my son’s finger with a trolley in Sainsbury’s when he was a toddler (don’t ask) and they put it in the accident book and got me a first sided.

BakedBeans47 · 23/02/2018 23:56

My daughter tripped over a rolled-up rug in Next and cut her lip and damaged her tooth. They administered first-aid, filed in a load of forms and advised us to visit minor injuries which we did. Weeks later I got a letter from the city council about the incident advising that the store were not to blame! I didn't hold them responsible anyway, accidents happen.
