And not wanted to stop reading it!!? This day I thought would never happen! Bad Dad by David Walliams.
I’m now panicking about what he might need to discover next to keep him hooked?!
Loves cars, loves gadgets
Got board of the tree house books after about a chapter, any thoughts???
I think he’d like Wonder.....

My son was totally addicted to Percy Jackson at about that age. Didn't read before that, now he is a right bookworm

Marypoppins19 · 18/02/2018 22:27

Oooo what’s that series about?

The Scott Pilgrim books are epic.

It's about a boy who is in a boarding school with no parents and turns out he is the son of a greek God and a human.
Lots of adventures and action follow.
Sounds rubbish but he really loved them.
As an added bonus it got my son into Greek mythology which was helpful at school too.

Alex Ryder is good too.

David Williams books were really popular with my P6, that's all they ever seemed to read! I think there are quite a few he has written, I know Tescos tends to stock then quite often.

Unicornchaser · 18/02/2018 22:52

My step son loves David Walliams books, there is a series of maybe 10 of them? Also likes David baddiel and Tom Gates who have similar writing styles.....

slippermaiden · 18/02/2018 23:05

My two love David Walliams too. Try Roddy Doyle... Brilliant is one DS is reading now and they had another one called something and the big fat baby!

Marypoppins19 · 18/02/2018 23:20

Thanks so much! Lots to try!!

David Walliams got my son into reading after the pulling teeth exercise of school books (curse you Biff and Chip).

He now likes to work his way through the whole collection by an author so he has read

  • David Walliams
  • Spy dog series (maybe a bit young for your son)
  • Diary of a Wimpy Kid series (lots of pictures/cartoons)
  • Beano comics and annuals
  • Roald Dahl
  • Horrible Histories
  • 39 clues series
  • Star Wars series

The only thing he hasn't liked is Harry Potter, but that's probably just because his sister is a big fan.
I hope his love of reading continues.

Thank you! More great suggestions. It feels like such a magic moment!

Oh and the Tom Gates series is popular with both of my children.

LakeFlyPie · 19/02/2018 10:03

Frank Cottrell Boyce's books for children. Very funny.

iklboo · 19/02/2018 10:08

Fangs - Vampire Spy
Captain Underpants

DS really enjoyed these.

KichenDancefloor · 19/02/2018 15:55

May I also recommend a torch? My DS seems to do the majority of his reading under the covers after lights out.

We get faux cross with him, but we're delighted that he's reading.

Illicit reading is much more fun!

geekymommy · 19/02/2018 18:44

Here in the US, we've got the Diary of a Wimpy Kid and Captain Underpants series of books that seem to be popular with kids who otherwise don't care for reading.
