Weaning

Sorry I don't know if I'm posting in the right section. FTM, my little one is coming up to 6 months soon and I really can't get my head round how to wean him. How do I start? Do I introduce purees in small amounts 3 times daily? How do I drop down a bottle of milk? No bashing please. Thank you Smile

I breastfeed so I’ve kept on feeding the same amount. I started with lunch and gave purées with individual vegetables or baby porridge. Once we had mastered that I introduced breakfast and then tea. I also introduced ‘picky bits’ such as cucumber/broccoli/ripe fruit. rice cakes/toast with butter/houmous/cream cheese etc.

I followed a plan whereby my DD tried one vegetable purée a day for two weeks in the run up to 6 months; this was to ensure she got her taste buds round bitter tastes. Then week three (after starting) she’d have one “meal” purée, usually around tea time. Eg: red cabbage & apple or carrot, mango and strawberry purée.
Now week 4 she is on two meals a day, breakfast and a tea. Eg, baby rice and blueberries for breakfast, blended bolognaise/ tuna and avocado mash for tea

Tbh I breastfeed too and haven’t actively reduced that, it’s still on demand. I would also say remember food before 1 is for fun, don’t force them to finish something or get disheartened if they don’t like something. It’s also not so stringent, my DD has teeth so sometimes I will pass her some cucumber or melon to chew on during the day. Good luck!!

I just gave DSes a bit of what I had on my plate - finger food, basically. I didn't introduce anything in any particular order, just avoided honey until after they turned one.

I didn't purée anything, btw, massive faff. Nor did I drop any feeds.

I’ve just started, so far we’re on creamy porridge for breakfast and trying different things at night - mushy potato, carrot and broccoli last night (not puréed) she’s also had a little bit of baby yoghurt but I intend to make these myself - yesterday peach and apple-that went down really well.

I don’t know if I’m doing it right, she gags a bit but I think that’s normal? I’m just trying random things.

Gagging is normal - babies' reflex is further forward to stop them from choking.

I started by giving DD little bits of whatever veg and fruit I had if she was awake when I was eating. She doesn't have teeth but is still great at eating carrot batons, pear, broccoli etc. No need to do purées.

She's been eating nearly a month and we've moved onto main meals, she loves curry (chicken shredded as no teeth) and I spoon that.

She also loves porridge, which I make extra thick so she can hold the spoon herself and it's harder to fall off. Same for Greek yoghurt.

I gave my baby broccoli and carrots for his first food a couple weeks ago. He squished it in his hand and didn't go near his mouth. A couple tries later it was sweet potato and he went for it, gagged and vomited a lot. It's alarming but you just got to leave them to learn. Now a week later I put on his highchair what I'm eating (baby appropriate) and he is getting better, gagging less. Not really swallowing much. It's a mess every meal time.
Still has exactly the same amount of milk. Food is fun until their one. You can do purées instead of your a bit nervous or I imagine purées might be more convienient and you know what's going in, but I don't have any experience on that side of things.
I just started offering food twice a day.

He loves a pear cut into quarters lengths, I ping it in a little water for a minute in microwave if it's hard and keep the skin on, and he really enjoys sucking/chewing on it.

Enjoy it and relax, it's lovely seeing your baby enjoy new foods.
