Kids/adults shoes

Just bought some school shoes for DS (11). Bought a size 5.5...they cost £34.99 .Hes just tried them on and they are too small, so now he will have to have a size 6 which means adult sizes and the prices start at £59. Do they really use that much more leather etc for such a price jump? Wouldn't mind but he seems to be the shortest kid in his year with the biggest feet...lol

back to the shop and bank tomorrow then.

blimey, do you really have to spend that much? What about somewhere like next that does reasonable leather shoes?

Furball · 02/05/2007 16:09

Marks and Sparks do good shoes

bozza · 02/05/2007 16:10

I don't think it's about the leather entirely, it is partly about having to pay VAT on them which obviously adds on 17.5% - although that does not account for all the difference.

Would if i could but this is his 4th pair of shoes. Have bought previous proper school shoes that have just fallen apart (they play footie/basketball etc at lunch but they are not allowed to change into trainers) so i now buy him black trainers and i don't care if the school has a winge about them!...lol

We live in the channel islands so we are not meant to be charged VAT..but i think some shops still do...very naughty!

My Ds 11 is a size 6, Clarks do size 6 boys school shoes for about £30. Bought him a lovely pair of ECCO at easter for £30 reduced from £43

bluebubbles · 02/05/2007 19:55

sounds like someone is just having a boast about how much she can afford to spend on shoes. do you really think anyone cares how much your sons footwear costs.

christywhisty · 03/05/2007 06:16

what is your problem bluesbubbles?
Twinmummy was sounding off at the fact you have to pay adult prices for a child's shoes which is often a huge hike in prices. If you have an 11 year old with big feet getting good quality school shoes at a reasonable price is a huge problem. My son isn't even in secondary school yet, but he now comes into adult prices for trainers and shoes.
Even Clarks have a very small choice for that size in boys school shoes.

The one thing I won't stint is shoes, as bad fitting and badly made shoes can ruin your feet for life.
Dread it when my daughter gets to past size 2, it is even worse for girls.

PrettyCandles · 03/05/2007 06:21

How rude!

katelyle · 03/05/2007 06:33

Don't start me on girl's shoes! I have a very active but fashion conscious 11 year old who wears a very wide size 4, and it is so hard to find shoes that she likes and which she can run and play in. The manufaturers seem to assume that girls sit around all day and go to the occasional party and never run, climb trees or play football!

An I agree, it's a scandal that you have to pay VAT on children's shoes whatever size they are.

Any yes, you do have to pay that much if you want to get shoes fitted, which I assume most of us do while our children's feet are still growing.

earlgrey · 03/05/2007 06:37

bluebubbles, I think that was totally uncalled for. And FWIW, totally untrue.

Furball · 03/05/2007 07:17

also when you look at just how many pairs of shoes the op has to buy!

lizziemun · 03/05/2007 08:06

I think the price of all children are to expensive, especialy (sp) Clarks.

Why do they charge £30+ for children shoes when we have to buy new every 6 weeks or so. Last time i bought dd (3yrs) a pair of shoes it cost me £28 at the same time we got dh a pair of shoes and they were £39 (on sale).

I'm lucky as i only have size four, so i don't have to pay vat on shoes unless they are a evening shoe.

Twinmummyx2 · 03/05/2007 10:57

at bluebubbles' not nice comment!

I don't live in mainland England where there are lovely cheaper shops (primark, matalan etc) we have very expensive shops so we have no choice to pay higher prices.

My point was that some people have to pay adult prices for shoes for their 11 year olds who are still children. And perhaps some shops should consider putting the prices up slowly for the shoes the bigger they get instead of a sudden price jump of £25!!

AND believe me i haven't got tons of money to be boasting about that is for sure. My boys have the odd new thing every change of season other than that it's hand-me-downs. B ut all footwear i do buy new.Not that i need to explain anything to you!!

blimey! some people!!!!

Thanks for everyone elses comments.

I have wide feet with a high instep, and have bought children's shoes (StartRite iirc)for myself, in what was then a children's shoe shop, in size 7 wide fitting. So it is possible that you may find children's shoes that fit your children, and so avoid paying VAT. I have to say I don't remember them being particularly cheap thoug.
