DS is 2.5 and speaks (more or less) English. We live in England, he goes to an English nursery, his best friends are his cousins and everyone in the immediate vicinity is and speaks English.
Im not English but have been here over half of my life, my parents live here and also speak English but they're intermediate with very heavy accents whereas I'm completely fluent and have no foreign accent, Im actually more comfortable speaking English as I do so 90% of the time which probably doesn't help.
I see them once a week with DS and we all speak my native language. DS seems to understand what's going on most of the time, isn't as great with direct instructions like he is when I speak to him in English but I can tell he does "get it".
He doesn't speak any words in my native tongue and I unfortunately don't speak to him in it when I'm not with my parents as Im usually in an English setting. (And probably due to what I mentioned above).
I want him to learn a bit more and speak it - I'm not expecting fluency but a basic level of understanding/communication would be nice as we have family back in my home country that we will inevitably see at some point. But I do find it hard to speak to him in my native tongue as it does not come naturally to me.
I've decided to dedicate a few hours a week to consciously speak to him in my native language and to see if it makes a difference.
So my question is - am I starting too late?
Also will it be enough?
So he will be in a 100% second language environment for about 3-5hours a week when at my parents,
I will be putting nursery songs and little cartoons/audio books in my native language on for him in the background as he plays either for 30mins to an hour each day or a larger block one day. And I will actively try to speak the language to him for a couple of hours each week so he gets used to me speaking it.
Any advice or opinions would be appreciated as I feel I have no clue what I'm doing
