Please could someone advise on car seats, currently my DS is 3 and a half and weights just over 15kg and in group 1 car seat. Is there any harm in me moving him to a group 2/3 car seat even though he is not 4 but is the correct weight? I have a problem with my hands and it's such a struggle with the buckle and tightening the straps, and I noticed the next size up you just use the seatbelt which would make a massive difference to me. Don't want to compromise on safety at all so wasn't sure, thanks so much xx

I'd recommend you have a read through the Facebook group 'car seat advice for mummies and daddies' as they suggest a child doesn't go into a high back booster until at least 4.5 years. They say that 15kg may be legal but it's not safe.

Lots of people wouldn't think twice about changing from a harnessed seat to a booster at 3.5 though so I'd say definitely do your research and then decide. It's difficult if you're finding the buckle and straps tricky though!

We use a high back booster with harness for our three yr old and the seat belt for the four yr old. Our three yr old is over 15 kgs but not tall enough for the seat belt also she still sleeps in the car so a normal seat belt isn't safe when she is sleeping. But our four yr ols changes at 3.5 he hadn't slept in the day in yrs, he was taller and much broader shoulders so the belt sat on his shoulders OK.
What kind of build is your child? Do they sleep in the car? How much do you drive?

The safest thing is harness for as long as possible, it's legal though so it's up to you. Is he reliable to keep the belt in the correct position, and if he sleeps in the car he is likely to slump the belt not be as effective.

thank you everyone, it helps to have opinions, he is not in the car loads but will probably have the odd nap, I will keep the harness one for a bit longer as although over 15kg, he is slight of build, thank you xx

We switched recently. DDis 3.7 and weighs about 15.5kg.

The fact is she is bloody tall and her shoulders were hunched under the headrest at its highest setting. So she spent all the time whining and managing to get her arms out which made it unsafe.

PILs are seething. But then they didnt like that we didnt have her rear facing from 1 year and she was bottle fed. All you can do is make a decision based on your situation.

If I were you I would leave it a bit longer though. Tough as it is, I think that will be just a phase. Am sure DC can be bribed with a custard cream like my DD was . If you can last until 4 then it will be better.
