PONYGIRL!

for letting her ds2 (18mos) climb a climbing frame with a hole at the top for sliding down a pole and he fell nearly 7 feet.

He seems to be fine: bit his tongue, and was a bit cuddly for about an hour, but then was trundling about happily and ate dinner perfectly well. I, on the other hand, am bleeding from the lashing I've been giving myself.

we've all done something similar, don't beat yourself up about it. You can't protect them from everything. Still feels sh*t though

coppertop · 30/07/2004 19:00

Sending you a big hug, Ponygirl. I did something similar when I let my ds1 go on to a climbing frame while he was having a meltdown. He threw himself off the top, bruised his arm and cut his head.

You really don't deserve a crap mother award. Hope you feel a little better sonn.

mckenzie · 30/07/2004 19:15

If this is the first time you've done something a little daft, then Id give you an award for being least crap mum. To get to 18 mths before something like this has happened I think is very very well done. Personally, for me it was 4 months old, fell off the sofa and hit the coffee table. and that was the first of many. In fact, DS is now 3 and only yesterday decided he didn't need my help with the fireman's pole at the local park and he came a cropper.
These things are designed to make you a better mum I think.

Please dont beat yourself up about it and one tip to offer if I may..... dont tell DH/DP.

And for me it was only last night! I picked up ds2 (6m)in his carseat forgetting he wasn't strapped in. He tilted forward and toppled right out smack onto the wood floor resulting in a nasty bump on his forehead. No lasting damage (and arnica is wonderful for this type of thing), except for the beating up myself which I'm still doing!

Soulfly · 30/07/2004 19:32

Don' t beat yourself up, my ds when he was 1 fell over on a carpet rod and knocked his tooth, it was crocked and i touched it and it fell out, i felt awful afterwards. But now he's 4 if he had a tooth there it would look werid he's always had a gap there. hugs ((( )))

I've done something similar with ds1 and a climbing frame at about the same age. Dh was with me, and we both thought the other was paying attention. Ds1 slipped on a walkway between two bits of frame (in a playground) and almost fell. Dh managed to catch him at the last minute by grabbing on to a bit of his clothing. Very very scary.

We beat ourselves up more by the "might have beens" than the actual event, don't we?

emmatmg · 30/07/2004 20:07

I'll add a few more to make you feel better.....

DS1= 18 Dh wraps him up in towel and he falls instantly, hitting head on edge of door. Blood, A+e and that funny glue stuff as he was too little for stitches. 2.5yrs= fall from climbing frame in garden, breaks flower pot that 'cushions' his fall. 3.5yrs climbing on stalls in kitchen, slips hits face/mouth on hard tile floor result = killing nerve to front tooth. He now has a very grey tooth right at the front. Nice!

DS2 didn't crawl until about 1 year but at about 8 months managed to get out of straps in High chair and fall with a loud THUD to the floor. No blood but lots of sick. His first(and amazingly only) trip to A&E. He is fearless and he has aged me far more than he's big brother with his stunts (jumping from the 7th stair for example!!)

DS3 only 10 months but already been caught by the ankle falling off the bed. Fingers nearly squashed flat in garden door.

Feeling any better?

Lisa78 · 30/07/2004 20:25

I could add my list but this weeks alone would take me an hour!!
My GP once told me that there isn't a child over 18m that hasn't been to A and E at least once (think she might have meant 8 months LOL)

wobblyknicks · 30/07/2004 20:35

Well I deserve a bad mummy award too for today . Got home after doing loads of shopping and it was on the back of the pushchair. Left dd in pushchair while I went up steps to unlock house, and forgot that she was on a slight slope. Heard a rustling sound and the pushchair had fallen right back onto the ground and dd was looking very shocked (but amazingly didn't cry). Luckily she wasn't hurt- the bags cushioned the fall and she was still strapped in - but I felt like utter sh*t!!!

Mo2 · 30/07/2004 20:43

No, no ... I deserve the bad Mummy award.... DS1 aged 4 has been complaining about being really hot in bed and we just keep telling him we can't do anything - window's open, he's only wearing PJ bottoms etc...
Then, went to change his duvet cover tonight and discovered he still has his winter 10.5 tog duvet on the bed... not his 4.5 tog summer one Oh well, it's been a cold summer so far....

wobblyknicks · 30/07/2004 20:45

Mo2 - that just shows what a good mummy you are, making sure he's protected against our Arctic summer!!!

Wallace · 30/07/2004 21:00

No I win this award hands down...

Went to a children's soft play area and decided to save a bit of money by getting ds in as a 4 year old (he has just turned 5). as I asked for the tickets ds started to pipe up with "but I'm five!" I tried to give him a nudge with my elbow...unfortunately at that moment he also moved towards me, so I ended up giving him an almighty whack in the mouth with my elbow

Piffleoffagus · 30/07/2004 21:01

Me!
Today I ran a red light from a roundabout, thinking it was the lights in the next set I was looking at...
Dumb bitch
Yesterday as I was cooking dinner I forgot to check the stairgate, heard a yelp and dd 21 mths and a non walker, very keen on going up, no clue about going down, had tried to WALK down the stairs and heaven knows how, only lost footing until the 2nd step from the top, oh jaysus what could have happened.
So PONY, there is someone much worse around!
Hugs... xx

Tommy · 30/07/2004 21:56

In Asda today, DS2 singing the Tikkabilla shopping song "Shopping, shopping, lots to do. I like shopping how about you?" really nicely and me making up this version and singing it louder
"Shopping, shopping, lots to do, I like shopping but without you..."

Bozza · 30/07/2004 22:10

Yesterday took DD swimming and when we got her out got her ready and then popped her in her car seat while I got dressed. Then took car seat to car and drove home - it was only as we were pulling onto drive that I noticed she wasn't strapped in, and when I got out that she was very slumped forward. She is only 10 weeks.

To cap that off when I got into the house I realised I had been out for 3 hours with the back door not only unlocked but wide open. At least I had set the alarm.

ponygirl · 31/07/2004 10:49

Oh, you guys are fantastic. Thank you for making me feel so much better! Kept waking in the night and remembering the awful moment when I realised what had happened and feeling sick. Not a very good night's sleep. I've got two older children, and we've had a lots of mishaps along the way, but I think this was our worst! Anyway, it's comforting to know I'm not alone. Thanks you lot. [[HUGS]]
