How do i get my DS to take his omega 3 oil?

My ds1 is 4 and has for the last year or so taken a fish oil supplement (Haliborange Omega 3 chewable capsules) which he calls his 'brain pills'.
But the last two weeks he's been refusing to take them, saying they taste of puke and he will gag and nearly throw up if i try to make him take it (I didn't force him) so we've stopped for now. i really want him to continue because I noticed an improvement in his concentration on school work, among the other benefits.
I've tried squeezing a capsule into his bedtime milk but he refused to drink it because it 'smelled funny' and i tried hiding it in a cheese and pickle sanndwich but he came home from school with it uneaten because he could smell the fish oil.
Has anyone tried a fish oil supplement that doesn't smell (he's got the nose of a cat .
We do use Columbus eggs but i don't want to give him eggs every day just for the omega 3.
any ideas?

Seven Seas capsules perhaps

Hathor · 30/04/2007 14:42

I wonder if supplements are necessary if we eat oily fish and veg like broccoli. How much food and what do the children need to have to get the omega 3 in their diets? And how much is the right amount?
Sorry OP - going off the point. I think there is also supplemented bread you could try - if he eats bread.

sevenseas syrup with omega fish oil!

Ah, hadn't thought of bread. He does take sandwiches to school most days.

I think there is also milk. Bet it is expensive though.

Hi there...
Here's some omega tips.

Buy it in oil form and mix in with yoghurt /porridge /sauces/shakes etc.Failing that you can puncture the caps and squeeze the oil out.
But it musnt be used in heat cooking as it will go rancid.

Unfortunately we would have to eat a crate load of fish to get a therpaeutic dose of EFA's, which is why most of us are slightly deficient. It is possible to get tested to find out exactly what levels we have, but its probably easier to follow the recommded dose on the tub/pack.

Most of them smell a bit, however Nutri Eskimo three kids smells of tutti frutti and is excellent quality.

Biocare uk, buy direct from their site, are a very good supplier of nutritional supplements, I'm dubious of fish oils on the high street which are cheaply manufactured the oils are often derived from fish farmed in polluted waters so they may have traces of mercury and other toxic elements.

Hope that helps!!

Cheekychopsy, thanks that's really useful. I'll go out and buy some Nutri Eskimo asap. What form does it come in, oil or capsules?
Thanks everyone else for your ideas.

My DD who hates the taste of fish likes the Boots strawberry flavour one. She even asks me for her "bitamins".

cheekychopsy · 30/04/2007 19:05

Check the label for artificial sweeteners / and any other additives, flavoured ones usually have em.

DSs have capsules - huge ones. They just swallow them whole like tablets.

We sat down one day (when they were 4 and 6 I think) practising with haribo jelly sweets, and they started off with a quarter of a jelly teddy and progressed up. Both of them had the technique mastered within 10 minutes. No problem! That was about 4 years ago!

Londonmamma · 30/04/2007 21:29

Hmmm - I like the nutella idea. Please tell me it doesn't cancel out the goodness of the fish oils!

lyrabelacqua · 30/04/2007 22:02

I thought about trying the swallow them whole method but he'd just gag (he's a bit young i think).
does Abidec have Omega 3 in it? he used to have it when he was tiny but i don't think it had fish oils in it back then.

Actually i did successfully hide it in his porridge once but if i started giving him porridge every day he'd smell a rat.

PS

Nothing wrong with a scrambled egg for breakfast every day when you are four.

brimfull · 30/04/2007 22:10

My ds 4 yrs takes eyeq strawberry tablets,he didn't take to the eskimo oil tutti fruiti, that was wasted money.
Btw his excema is a lot better since staring them

Hathor · 30/04/2007 22:24

Is cod liver oil, or cod liver oil capsules the same thing as omega oils?

lyrabelacqua · 30/04/2007 22:25

What did he not like about the eskimo oil? Was it the taste? DS1 is a bit picky about funny tasting things and will just let it dribble out of his mouth on to the floor

lyrabelacqua · 30/04/2007 22:26

Yes, Hathor, afaik.

The eskimo oil was fine the first time, slightly dodgy the second time ,complete refusal the third time.
I think it was more the oily consitency more than the taste, with the strawberry tblets ,he's swalloed them before the oily stuff gets too much.

I have a bottle of eskimo oil if you want it.

MrsGumby · 30/04/2007 22:29

Have you tried EyeQ Smooth? Tastes like fruity yogurt (with a hint of fish, mmmm!) but my DS takes it without any problems.

cheekychopsy · 30/04/2007 23:17

Cod liver oil is ok, a low grade type though.
Half the supplements on the mass market are a waste of money because they are loaded with excess ingredients which usually defeat the object of taking efa's anyway. ie: fish oils are calming mood levellers: sugar and additives are known triggers for hyperactive behaviour.Rancid oils are carnigogenic, and who knows how long some have been on the shelves in some shops. If nutella works, why not consider almond nut spread (sugar free)...much better for our babies.
I'm a ranter on this as its my field sorreee.

lyrabelacqua · 30/04/2007 23:35

ggirl, i'd love it if you're sure you want to give it away. it's expensive stuff.

Is he old enough to cooperate with a bit of bribery - ie the traditional spoonful of sugar to help the medicine go down? You may wish to substitute a chocolate button or whatever motivates your ds!
