Newborn heel prick screening tests- borderline retest

Hi,

I'm hoping someone can offer advice on this as at the minute I feel like my world is falling apart.

My son is 2 weeks old today and the midwife turned up unexpectedly this morning to repeat his day 5 heel prick screening test as his result was borderline for the thyroid test. A bit of background incase it's relevant... My son was born at 35+4 and had a 4 day stay in SCBU and has had 2 rounds of phototherapy treatment for jaundice but still has it (midwives aren't concerned but he does have a referral to the prolonged jaundice clinic).

Has anyone else been in this situation? I'm terrified there's something wrong with him. I know all the conditions are treatable but everything I read says treatment should begin within 3 weeks of birth and the last results seem to have taken over a week to come back.

Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

Sometimes in prem babies the thyroid function is not fullly detected by the initial day 5 screen; in babies born under 32 weeks a repeat is performed routinely. Perhaps your baby’s results were borderline because he was a little early? Sorry - no other advice but hoping all works out ok. CHT is really rare so try not to worry.
