Could this be a sign ds is ready for training

DS (2yrs) just started responding when asked if "poo'd", he tries to remove clothing and nappy. Totally new to potty training and not sure what signs to look for - have books but would like a little more advice. Thinking if this is a sign, I will be trying this weekend. He doesn't seem to like pull up nappies though - I've tried 'little walkers' and 'pull ups' but he pulls them straight off and wants 'proper' nappy on (I use disposables). Anyone able to give me any ideas.

Hmm - ds has been coming up to me and saying "errrrrgh" when he has done a poo for quite a while now - but doesn't seem to be aware until after he has done it - so I am leaving it for now. He's only young yet!

Is he only responding when you ask him if he's done a poo? If so then it's probably you he's reponding to, not the fact he's pooed.

Knowing for himself that he's had a wee or a poo is a step forward, but it's probably a safer bet to wait until he knows he's doing it - or even better, knows that he needs to.

I started training DS when he was 2.4 months which co-incided with last July's heatwave.

Summer is an ideal time, as DC can go nappyless, and you can have a couple of potties around.

When I started DS couldn;t tell me when he needed a wee but I knew he could feel the sensation and seemed to have good bladder control, so I went for it. In retrospect he was probably a bit young and it took about 4 weeks to get him properly clean & dry...it got so mcuh easier when he started actually asking to go (at about 2.6), but you get round that to begin with by taking them regularly every hour ro so.

TBH I think you need to know he knows about weeing rather than pooing, the pooing comes more easily, as they probably only go once a day and often there are more signs, so you can get them there in time.

I would start off by leaving his nappy off for short periods, watching him like a hawk and leaving a potty around, suggesting he sits on it, etc, then you can go from there.

Thanks for your feedback. I think I will watch and wait a while longer. He does seem to know wee's when he's undressed but not sure when he is dressed. Summer is coming so hopefully will be nice and warm so better for trying. HV seems to think boys have this sorted by 25/26 months so was starting to hope that we were getting the first signs but looking at this feedback, I would be better waiting and not pushing him.

I think your HV is wildly optimistic, tbh! It's often closer to 3, and boys are usually later than girls - although of course it varies wildly.

I take the laid-back approach to potty training, and I would definitely agree not to push him. Let him take the lead, and when you think he's ready then go for it - but to his timetable, not because the HV thinks he should be dry by now.

Thanks WWB. I think my HV is v optimistic about many things and not v organised. I will wait and see what happens with ds and maybe try when weather is definitely better and my back garden sorted for him.

HV talking crap. Most boys DO NOT have this anywhere near sorted by 26 months - closer to 36!

moondog · 01/05/2007 08:38

Depends on the kid. Both mine were out of nappies by 24 months.
If he seems ready why not give it a whirl.
Nappies are a bloody hasle.

Shoshable · 01/05/2007 08:56

It really does depend on the child, while I agree it is usually 2.6+ amd boys later than girls (been a CM 26 years so do have little bit of experience) I have just had aboy totally dry and clean within aweek at 22 months! First one tho, had acouple of girls dry by that age and alot of girls by 2.6, but never a boy before.
And it was all his own idea, has very good speech, and just decided he wasnt going to wear a nappy, and didnt
