Bottom washing

Hello. My DD is 6 months. I wash her bottom with water and a mild baby bodywash everytime I change her nappy. Someone told me not to do this as it may affect her ph levels but.... I don't wash inside or near the opening of the vagina. I am just making sure all the urine is off her skin - am I doing something wrong?

I wouldn't do this - I would just use water. This much exposure to a cleaning product would make me nervous, particularly for a baby so young. (I do only have boys, granted.)

Must admit that I don't do this, not because I think it is wrong. I would think just water would be better.

Thank you!

So do you think it might be better to just use water everytime and only use water and the baby soap when she's done a no. 2?

Or should I use wet wipes most of the time? (the person who told me not to do this was telling me to use wet wipes but I'm not sure how effective they are)

I use a mixture of 1 cup water, 1tbsp baby wash, 1tbsp baby oil as recommended on the nappylady website, there are a few other mixtures on there as well. Haven't had any problems at all.

When dcs were newborns, I used cotton wool and water. Ds is 5 months now and I use wet wipes, a good make, unperfumed etc. I like huggies as they are nice and thick.

but I think if your chil'd skin isn't suffering keep on doing what you are doing. I'm just lazy

NotQuiteCockney · 30/04/2007 07:59

I would just use water and cotton balls, tbh. That's what I used on my boys when they pooed.

I've not had any problems so far. I use an organic nappy balm too but it seems plain water might be better (although it is an organic baby soap that I use). Still I don't want to be doing the wrong thing.

I just dipped entire region in a sinkful of tepid water and swished about a bit.
Not keen on any chemicals at all or even wetwipes.

saintmaybe · 30/04/2007 09:17

Veg oil on cotton wool is good for cleaning last traces of poo (after water)

colditz · 30/04/2007 09:25

Way too much soap (and body wash is just liquid soap)

You could dry her skin out really badly

However, to be honest if it hasn't happened yet is probably won't, but it's still an entirely unnecessary amount of chemicals on a little baby's skin. (Says the wipe addict)

If you are going to the effort noty to use wipes, just use water.

Thanks to you all. Glad I've got it sorted out - looks like water is the way forward for me!
