Baby On Board! What's the point?

Emmastone123 · 02/02/2018 12:59

I'm having a baby in a few weeks. Someone suggested a Baby on Board sign for the car. I live and drive around central London (if that makes a difference).
What's the point of these signs? Do other drivers treat you differently? Do I need one?
Just a tad confused!
Thanks.

I think they are supposed to be for if you have an accident then emergency services know to look for a baby?

fruityb · 02/02/2018 13:02

For accidents I assume

PotteringAlong · 02/02/2018 13:04

That’s not true. A) if you have an accident so severe it’s thrown a car seat out of your car the crap bit of plastic is unlikely to have survived and b) what about all those parents who drop their child off at Nursery etc and drive off without removing the sign?

You don’t need one. It’s a way to fleece more money from new parents and for parents to be smug about it.

They are tacky, most likely no-one takes notice. I saw one today with 'Grandchildren onboard', no children in the car.

Cherrycokewinning · 02/02/2018 13:07

Why does there have to be a point? It’s just decoration.

phoenix1973 · 02/02/2018 13:07

I couldnt care less if there's a baby on board so long as it's not driving!
Unnecessary part of the parenthood club

Emmastone123 · 02/02/2018 13:11

Cherrycoke - decoration? Why would I decorate my car??

OP posts:
dementedpixie · 02/02/2018 13:12

I've never seen the need for them so never had one

Bellamuerte · 02/02/2018 13:15

I think they are supposed to be for if you have an accident then emergency services know to look for a baby?

But what if you're driving without the baby in the car and they waste time looking for a non-existent baby?

WTFIsThisVirus · 02/02/2018 13:15

I think some people get them, thinking that other drivers will be more cautious around them or pay more attention. but, as a driver, shouldn't you just pay attention anyway? (rhetorical question)

JenTeale · 02/02/2018 14:26

They explain to other road users why you are driving like an arse

Cherrycokewinning · 02/02/2018 15:28

I don’t know why you would Emma. But why do people put furry dice in their car? Or nodding dogs? Or silk flowers?

You seem rather anti them for someone who doesn’t understand what they’re for.

Crumbs1 · 02/02/2018 15:31

Unecessaryand a bit tacky. Even worse are ones that says Little Princess on board or similar.

Scrumptiousbears · 02/02/2018 15:37

I think these are awful things and absolutely no need for them. The argument about the accident situation is bollocks cause no one takes these signs out when the child is no longer in the car.

PerfumeIsAMessage · 02/02/2018 15:45

The emergency service thing is a myth.

Chaosofcalm · 02/02/2018 16:01

For the company making them to make money.

Cherrycokewinning · 02/02/2018 16:23

Why are they awful? They’re pointless but completely inoffensive

Lentilbaby · 02/02/2018 16:29

Oh dear....I didn’t realise how awful people think they are! I have one in the hope that any idiot drivers will calm down on their driving if they are anywhere near my car.

YerAuntFanny · 02/02/2018 16:30

Snopes myth bust

They were originally designed as a reminder to drive safely.

Realistically they serve no purpose. If someone is driving like an arsehole speeding/drunk/texting etc then they won't care or notice it.

GreenTulips · 02/02/2018 16:33

I didn’t realise how awful people think they are!

Yep make me cringe -

Look at me I have a baby - nobody cares - they either are safe drivers or knobs - no in between

Crumbs1 · 02/02/2018 16:45

Why would you drive more carefully because there was a child in the preceding car? Do they matter more than say a teenager, a middle aged person or elderly person? I hope not - all lives being equal.

They are designed for smugness.

Lentilbaby · 02/02/2018 22:25

Wow....I’m really not wanting everyone to look at me or being smug. For the sake of a couple of quid, I bought one in the hope it might make some people think. For me it’s a small price to pay for the potential safety of my baby. I find it amazing how some thing so inoffensive can piss people off so much!

Scrumptiousbears · 03/02/2018 05:29

Do you really think anyone would look at the sign and drive more carefully though? I think that naïve.

Shadow666 · 03/02/2018 05:56

They’re in case you forget you have a child. Like if you go to the supermarket and get in your car to drive home and you suddenly remember, shit I forgot the baby. Then you have to run back and get him

CapnHaddock · 03/02/2018 06:08

@Shadow666 GrinGrin

They’re tacky and pointless. Nearly as bad as those stickers that say ‘powered by fairy dust’
