Hiya ftm so in constant need for advice sorry if these questions seem silly

When did you stop giving you little one puréed food and kinda start giving them foods chopped up ? Like actual dinners etc.

Not age more how long after you started did you do chopped up dinners ?

Wee one is nearly 6 months but had been eating puréed foods for about 1.5 months and keeps trying to grab my adult food or opens his mouth wide when he sees me eating , it's cute but makes me feel guilty lol

My little one is the same age. If I'm eating something and she wants some I'll break a bit off or chop a bit off and she will eat it :)

DeleteOrDecay · 31/01/2018 18:00

Mine have never had purées. We just gave them what we were having from 6 months. Just watch out for salt content.

ThatsMyCow · 31/01/2018 18:04

Another that didn't do purees. I did try at one point, but DD didn't like them. Well, apart from some sort of chocolate pudding one 🙄

You can do lots of soft food if you want to do solids. Banana, tomatoes, stewed apple, those tiny cheese chunks, I think by cathedral? Lots of things like that, or can also just give whatever you're eating.

I'm just afraid he will choke on anything that isn't puréed am I being silly ?

Not silly at all, I think loads of people worry. I worried about that too, but I just had to move onto normal food because she really wouldn't eat the purees and didn't like anybody feeding her, apart from one shop bought chocolate one. I bought all sorts of things to make and store her pureed food that I thought I'd be making all the time haha.

Most babies seem to get along though, they just mush up the food with their gums even when they have no teeth! It's so funny to see. Try him on a banana first maybe, they mush up really easily for babies. Baby porridge or baby muesli too, it is very soft but still thick and has a texture to it so it's almost like solids but would be difficult to choke on.

If he's trying to grab your food, you could even try him feeding himself some small things and see how he likes it.

It's very early.

ShowOfHands · 31/01/2018 18:36

Never gave purees, just normal food from 6 months.

harlaandgoddard · 31/01/2018 18:37

My DD wouldn’t eat stage 2 food (purée but with tiny lumps in) until 10 months. So don’t worry if yours doesn’t either as they are used to purees, but yes you can give them normal food from the start.

Marcine · 31/01/2018 18:39

From 6 months fork-mashed normal meals and soft finger foods are fine. If you cook without adding salt you can just mush up a bit of what you have.

MiaD13 · 31/01/2018 18:58

Great thanks everyone

I know it's early I'm not going to make a move until he's a wee bit further on I was just curious if when the sort of average time people did it was

Never gave purée. From 6 months she has whatever we have, casserole, spag bol, curry etc.

I was terrified of choking and I don't go in for the 'baby led weaning' thing at all.

My son's first finger food was those little Ella's Kitchen melty puff crisps. They're not the most nutritious snack in the world but they're the perfect size and shape for babies to hold, they melt in their mouths so they won't choke, and DS seemed to like them (I thought they tasted pretty grim but oh well).

I think he started getting those and the odd rusk at about seven months. Once he was good with those we started giving him more finger foods. Toast with different spreads is a good one as they can just suck on it and it can be cut into fingers. DS loved (and still loves) peanut butter and mashed avocado on toast.
