DS hearing voices in his head

Not sure if I'm over reacting or reading too much into this, but our 4yo son has started 'hearing voices in his head' as he puts it. Yesterday, he started hitting his head because the voice wouldnt shut up. He calls the voice/it/whatever 'PJ'.
DH asked him if it was his imaginary friend, only to be told that they were silly! DH is worried, me less so as this has only happened a couple of times. I'm going to try talking to DS later and quietly ask what he means/how he feels. He's a very intelligent, articulate, sensitive little boy, so I wonder if its his imagination and the head hitting was just tiredness?
Any thoughts? Apart from not making a fuss about it!

I’m no expert here, but I just wanted to ask, how long his has been going on for? The reason why I ask is because this is the kind of thing that can happen with a bad water infection. So if it’s just come on recently could be a possible cause?

Thanks! Only the last few days or so, the head hitting was only the once. He then got upset and started crying over something silly, so we comforted him and left it.
He has got a wee cold and a blocked nose and bit of a cough, but we all have. Do you mean water as in urine or water as in water in his ears from swimming?
Sorry for being thick!!

Yes I mean urine infection. They sometimes present very odd symptoms that you wouldn’t expect. Personally I would get him to the doctor and try and get a urine sample just in case it’s needed.

Thank you for that! He's peeing ok, but I'll keep a close eye on it.
I'd struggle to get a Dr appt tbh, its so busy! But I'll have a chat with his key worker at nursery, see what they think.
Thanks, I never would have thought of urine infection!

It can be a side effect of an infection or cold type illness in small children - anything that raises the body temp and in particular the Brain temp can cause it, so if he had a cold that would make sense. Check ifbhe has a temperature and put a cold flannel on his forehead. I went through a phase of over heating at night around that age and had voices and the odd hallucination - frightened the crap out of my parents but I just needed lots of water and Cooling down.

Just my 2 cents,
Maybe he is just becoming aware of his thoughts.
Which obviously is a good thing, then you can help him realise that he has control over them. Without violence Wink

I wouldn't necessarily think it's anything serious but you need to make a GP appointment and take your son for a urine test and check up. You don't need the key worker at nursery you need a doctor and I hope by now you've asked for an urgent appointment. It's important that you go.
