My 11 month old eating/drinking enough?

PasstheStarmix · 31/01/2018 11:16

Hi, just checking DS is having enough because his milk he will only entertain one bottle a day. This is his usual schedule:

7am-8am: usually a big bowl of porridge/Musli with fruit mixed in and water in sippy cup (he drinks some of this and pours some down himself and on floor) sometimes he’ll have some toast with nut butter on or egg on toast, pancakes but he tends to have porridge mostly as likes this the best

12pm-1pm: Lunch is homemade and I batch freeze it (he will eat 5 cubes (ozs) and he usually has):
Spag bol/ beef stewing steak casserole or chicken & mushroom casserole/ salmon, veg & pot with spinach or creamy cheese cod pot bake. I offer organic no sugar custard or some fruit for dessert which he usually has some (sometimes too full). He has some water.

4pm-5pm: 9oz bottle of milk (drinks all) this is his only bottle of the day

6.30-7pm: dinner is homemade and like lunch batch frozen. He will have 4 ice cubes (ozs) and has something like:
Tuna pasta bake, chicken and vegetable soup, mackerel in tomato sauce with pasta, mash with veg and broccoli cauliflower cheese. I will offer Greek natural yoghurt mixed with fruit for dessert which he usually eats emost-all of (about 1-2 big dessert spoons and 2 oz fruit or there abouts.) he’ll sip a little water.

Is this enough?

He’ll no longer take his midmorning or bedtime bottles and he won’t eat his dinner earlier and milk later (tried that and it didn’t go down well whatsoever.)

How is his weight? If gaining along his centile I wouldn't worry.

PasstheStarmix · 31/01/2018 11:29

He’s usually bang in the middle on 50th percentile. Last time weighed him he was around 9.5kg but that was a month ago so he’ll be more now. He poops after most meals usually so about 2-3 times a day on average.

PasstheStarmix · 31/01/2018 11:33

All the meals I make are loaded with ingredients so a lot more per spoonful so I sometimes think 4 oz of my dinner is a lot more than say 4 oz of what you’d get off the shelf.

Sounds absolutely fine op. I wouldn't worry.

PasstheStarmix · 31/01/2018 11:39

Thanks, I just seem to see loads of other babies eating much more and drinking loads of milk. Ds seems like a eat to sustain baby. I cannot get anything else into him.

OP posts:
Stroller15 · 31/01/2018 11:41

Sounds enough to me! If he's gaining weight I wouldn't worry, they'll tell you if they're hungry or want more milk.

TeddyIsaHe · 31/01/2018 11:47

Sounds fine! Dd is STILL eating like a bird at 13 months. I’ve decided not stressing is the way forward, otherwise I’m going to go even more grey.

PasstheStarmix · 31/01/2018 11:58

Teddy was your dd the same with not wanting much milk a day as well? It’s like he’d rathed be doing something else and gets too distracted. I have to really space his meals out to ensure he’s hungry enough or he’ll not entertain it. He won’t eat chocolate (milky bar button) didn’t seem keen and doesn’t like the texture of cake (think I have a super health eater.) wish I could eat like that. Has anybody experienced this and if so did your baby’s appetite increase alittle when older?

OP posts:
PasstheStarmix · 31/01/2018 11:59

Oh forgot to mention ds isn’t crawling or walking yet; he does rock on all fours so I think crawling isn’t far away. Maybe his appetite may increase when he’s more on the move?

OP posts:
InDubiousBattle · 31/01/2018 13:26

His appetite will most likely increase when he starts to crawl/walk. My two were early crawlers (both crawling by 7 months)and both ate well I think, ds ate less than dd but more variety of things. My dd dropped milk feeds really quickly on weaning, she was mix fed, mainly bf but with 1 bedtime ff a day and by 11 monthsshe had abandoned bf and that bedtime milk was the only one he had. She dropped that by 14-15 months. Ds was still having bedtime milk at 3 so I was worried but the hv said it was fine, just to give her calcium rich foods.

A couple of things to bear in mind op, perceptions differ from parent to parent so your 'he only ate 4 table spoons' could be someone else's 'he ate Loads! 4 tablespoons!', also I know some parents for whatever reason seem obsessed with the fact that their dc eat loads and see it as some sort of parenting bench mark! It really isn't, babies this age should be presentedwith healthy food and allowed to eat to their appetite.

PasstheStarmix · 31/01/2018 14:34

Thanks InDubiousBattle you’re right and ds does eat a large variety of healthy foods and he likes it all so at least that’s one good thing. He was easy to wean and likes all the meals I make him which will mean at least when he gets older I don’t have to change anything as he’s already eating a lot of the meals me and dh eat.

Maybe it’s better he eats to maintain as he certainly isn’t a greedy baby and knows when he’s full which means he never vomits. I suppose I just always worry he’s not having enough; probably because I’m a FTM and all babies I’ve seen seem to eat a lot. It’s like you said everyone’s perception is different which lead me to thinking he’ll eat so much but every oz is packed full of meat, veg and carbs and maybe more filling than say the equivalent on the shelf that may have more liquid added and less per oz if that makes sense. He also never wakes up hungry in the night. I’m sure his appetite will increase like you said once he’s on the mood so I can’t compare his appetite to babies that are.

move that should say

PasstheStarmix · 31/01/2018 14:37

It’s interesting as well to hear that at the same age your dd had one milk a day. That’s another concern, I always worry about him getting enough to drink. He does have some water with every meal and water from his foods such as fruit etc. Honestly I’ll just be pleased when he can speak and tell me when he’s hungry!

OP posts:
MiddleEnglishStaken · 31/01/2018 14:40

That's roughly what my 10 months old eats Thanks.

PasstheStarmix · 31/01/2018 14:56

Thanks Middle; it’s good to know ds isn’t the only one! Smile

As long as he get 350mg of calcium, you are giving multi vitamins and he is putting on weight then it all sounds good.

PasstheStarmix · 31/01/2018 16:51

Thanks, he gets a multivitamin everyday in his milk. I add milk and cheese to a lot of his meals and he eats yoghurt and custard. He also eats a lot of foods with calcium in such as Broxli and spinach etc. Hopefully that will mean he gets enough.

OP posts:
PasstheStarmix · 31/01/2018 16:51

broccoli

Sounds like a good healthy diet. My baby is 11 months and eats loads but he only has 1 bottle a day.

PasstheStarmix · 03/02/2018 20:55

Thanks buck. I think a lot of the problem has been down to teething. Ds has suddenly starting having alittle bit more the last 3 days. He seems really up for eating again and ate 4 oz dinner followed by massive bowl of yoghurt and fruit and then some custard and more fruit afterward.

OP posts:
PasstheStarmix · 03/02/2018 20:56

He’s been eating bigger lunches too. Still only the one 9 oz bottle of milk but he’ll drink it all.

OP posts:
PasstheStarmix · 03/02/2018 20:57

I’ve increased his breakfast too and he’s eating more there aswell.

ThoughACandleBurnsNoOnesHome · 03/02/2018 21:21

Sounds about the same as my 9.5 month old, except they have their bottle at 6.30/7 before bed and has his tea at 4.

I make a 9oz bottle and use 6oz for porridge for breakfast and the remaining formula I put in the sippy cup. But he rarely has more than a couple of sips. It doesn't bother him not to have the rest though.

He doesn't take a lot from his cup either but I'm not worried as I know he will take it and that he has no issues using his cup so can only assume that he's not thirsty, if you see what I mean.

It's hard to know if they're getting enough. But I think he eats a good variety of things like stews, fish, soups, chopped up fruit, cubes of cheese and yoghurt, toast with just about any topping! Lol.

Sashkin · 03/02/2018 21:32

Sounds like loads. DS is 10.5months and has a feed when he wakes up (around 7am), and a 90g yoghurt and a mini banana mid morning.

He then has either a sandwich (made with half a slice of bread) or 100ml soup, or some mashed vegetables at 2pm (he naps 11:30-13:30) and 100g of broccoli cheese, or daal, or veggie cottage pie, at 6pm.

He feeds to sleep at 8pm, and usually wakes at 1am for another feed. No other milk during the day (unless he’s teething or ill, and that is for comfort not hunger). He’s slimmed down since he started cruising but he’s still pretty stocky.
