Best toys for a 4 month old

DC1 is 4 months old and starting to get interested in toys. I'd like to buy one or two more but am not sure what to get. What do MNers recommend?

Currently we have: 2nd hand Baby Bjorn bouncer chair with toy bar (DC loves it), play mat/gym (likes it but for short periods only), various soft toys (not interested), rattle (only mildly interested), wooden thing I used to play with as a baby with colourful figures which pop up when baby hits them (loves it).

Any suggestions welcome! What did/do your DC love at that age?

DS has couple of Lamaze toys. They are different textures and bright colours. He also has a play mat and some fabric books.
To be honest they don't need a lot at this age.

Not a toy as such but he/she would probably enjoy you blowing bubbles. Cheap too!

My 4 month old DD's favourite toy is currently the nuby wacky teether ring. It's just the right circumference for her to grab and bring to her mouth without needing help. She sits for hours chewing on the ears Grin

I second getting a nuby teether; the basic cheap one is very popular with DD to the point that friends have also bought their baby one who also loves it.

Mothercare pack of 4 activity balls are great from this age.

The Lamaze toys are fab and worth the price tag. Waitrose often offer discounts on them.

DD absolutely loved her taggy bear toy at that age.

You can get these little socks and wrist straps that have bells or rattles in them, babies go crazy kicking their arms and legs around with them on.

silver wrapping paper. Watching our dogs.

Jumperoo, nuby ring, anything with taggy bits on it, a hungry caterpillar rattle with a plastic tail, chiffon scarves, bubbles.

My little boy (now 7 months) loves these:

He also loves playing with bits and bobs from around the house...spoons, magazine, baby comb and hairbrush, zipped up changing bag etc!

best toy for a baby at that age is a chatty happy parent to spend time with. they really don't need much else.

jacobsgirl · 31/01/2018 21:35

Lamaze octopus for sure !!! Available on Amazon has my wee boy screeching which joy everytime he sees it

GlennRheeismyfavourite · 31/01/2018 21:36

Big ostrich feather to tickle her with - got this idea from baby sensory so ordered some on line - super cheap and it makes my baby giggle beautifully!

GlennRheeismyfavourite · 31/01/2018 21:38

Also giant silver foil blanket - another baby sensory idea! I think mine was £1.99 from amazon, just one of those foil blankets they give out to runners after races/in emergency kits. My baby loves scrunching it up and chewing it!

NutCase82 · 31/01/2018 21:51

Lamaze here too, I got mine second hand and stuck them in the wash.

Elephant with the flappy ears songs.

Beat bow wow

Finding Nemo jumperoo

Some of these are labelled for older kids - like the jumperoo because of hip problems of over used so limit time with that.

Celticlassie · 31/01/2018 22:02

My wee one had some soft blocks. She loved them. She found them easy to grab.

MunsteadWood · 01/02/2018 22:33

Thanks so much for all the suggestions. I have ordered teething rings and one of the Lamaze toys. Looking forward to see what DC thinks! I've also put bubbles on the list for my next supermarket shop - lovely idea.

Obviously he also has a chatty happy parent (ie, me) spending 24/7 with him, but I think sometimes there are limits to my entertaining abilities (and to my energy!)

Thanks again for all these lovely ideas.
