Fungal nappy rash

My LO has had a fungal nappy rash from being one month old (currently 5 months). We have tried everything we can think of - daily nappy off, using water wipes or cotton wool and water, different nappies, drying her after, frequently changing her... but it never fully goes away.

The dr said it’s one of those things and there’s nothing else we can do - he said she will probably have it the whole time she’s in nappies. I asked for the anti fungal cream on a repeat prescription but he said this wasn’t possible, and that I could buy the cream - but it’s £5 for the tiniest tube that we go through really quickly! Today they prescribed a bigger tube, and I asked the pharmacy and they said it was only £4 but that I shouldn’t buy it as (1) she’s entitled to free prescriptions and (2) she will become immune to the product. I’m now at a loss of what to do - do I keep going back every time I run out and get different creams or just buy a larger tube??! Any tips would be great.

Have to tried seeing another GP?

sthitch · 30/01/2018 20:29

Seen 3 so far - seen them about other things and mentioned it each time.

I know you mentioned trying different nappies - have you tried all the different brands ? My DD had this and it only went away when we changed from Asda nappies to Pampers.

Have the doctors tested for a bacterial infection too? My daughter had an awful nappy rash from 2 weeks and in the end, an antifungal cream and a separate anti-bacterial cream cleared it.

CoperCabana · 30/01/2018 21:28

My little baby had something similar and we had great success with Weleda Calendula cream. Might be worth a try?

kikibo · 30/01/2018 21:33

Or calendula in general. Smells better than the normal zinc one.

CoperCabana · 30/01/2018 21:33

According to a ‘friend’ it works on post partum piles also...

PragmaticWench · 30/01/2018 21:36

Is her poo green, frothy or acidic at all? Just wondering about a milk intolerance or allergy as this can make poo acidic. As can reflux or a tongue tie, which may have other symptoms each.

Might be worth ruling those out.

sthitch · 30/01/2018 22:07

Her poo has always been green but I’ve read that SMA comfort makes it green?

She also has reflux but is getting a lot better with this.

She hasn’t been tested for bacterial infection - she did have a stint in hospital because of unusual head holding behaviour and it turned out she had a water infection - would they have found a bacteria infection whilst checking for this?

We’re having constant problems- nothing major but we’re constantly at the doctors- I try to manage everything without going but she seems to have one thing after another and this rash has never fully gone - I think they don’t really worry about it as it’s not that bad, but it can get really bad (blisters etc) plus it can’t be nice having a fungal infection down there!

sthitch · 30/01/2018 22:15

She has been to the drs regarding

Reflux - just a sicky baby, get on with it
Nappy rash - mentioned each time I’ve gone
3 x regarding the head holding and very unsettled - finally got the water infection diagnoses but it was sorted by the time they got the results
Today - she has a scabby ear that the pharmacist says she had to see a GP for, given antibiotic cream

I feel like I’m constantly there - he was like , are you a first time Mum with these visits? I worry about going but it’s usually advice from the pharmacy to go? I feel like I can’t book another appointment as they think I’m some silly Mum with no clue.

Sthitch- I had a male doctor who constantly asked if this was my first when our LO has a constant cold and wheeze. It really started to wind me up. I ended up asking to see a different doctor who was coincidentally female. She was brilliant. She said that it’s a parents responsibility to take a child to the doctors if they notice something strange and the doctors job to decifer if they require treatment... will it go away on its own... what can they do to help and advise etc. She said a lot of parents bring their little ones in early on a lot because they pick up so much. She advised to continue to come back if I was concerned or if there were any changes and not to be put off even if she thought no treatment at that point. She said it’s the children we never see we really worry about x

sthitch · 30/01/2018 22:26

Thank you! It really bugged me today because as an adult I never go to the drs (literally once or twice in years) so I don’t just pop in every week for a laugh.

Now I’ve read that it’s not just ‘one of those things’ having a rash it has worried me because I don’t know what to do to get rid of it and make it nice for her - she could be sore or itchy and I want her to be completely fine.

@copercabana does that stuff work
on fungal infections? (Only reason I ask is because sudacrem etc makes it worse so I want to avoid this)

Are you sure it's a fungal infection?

My ds had reflux and a severe lactose intolerance as a baby. Lactose intolerance can also cause nappy rash. Has your ds seen a paediatrician?

welliments · 30/01/2018 23:09

Try a good acidophilus powder once a day.

I used a natural cream with lavender and chamomile which really helps to keep it under control.

PragmaticWench · 31/01/2018 09:07

Green poo, reflux and nappy rash that won't clear can all be symptoms of a milk allergy. It may not be, but it sounds possible.

Theresahairbrushinthefridge · 31/01/2018 09:13

I agree. Try changing her milk. Any change will be quick.

Theresahairbrushinthefridge · 31/01/2018 09:14

You can buy lactose free formula.

UserSnoozer · 31/01/2018 09:16

Sudocrem. Slather it on and and reapply with each nappy change. Should clear up fairly quickly

CoperCabana · 31/01/2018 12:18

If you google calendula and fungal it seems to be a common remedy. It is Lovely natural nappy cream so may be worth a try.

PragmaticWench · 31/01/2018 13:00

Lactose intolerance is very rare in a baby unless there is a family member with it. CMPA is much more common. Just in case you decide to change milks.

Snotato · 31/01/2018 13:13

Op-my doctor prescribed this for my dd’s nappy fungal infection.it cleared it up within days.its a canesten one.is this what you have tried already?
And you shouldn’t have to pay prescription charges for children.

Hope it gets sorted soon.

My poor DS2 had awful fungal nappy rash. I was desperate to try anything - my aunt is a midwife and recommend egg white instead of a barrier cream and I also recommend acidophilus powder to help replenish the healthy gut bacteria in a bid to help the green poo.

Also are you taking any supplements & BF at all? I was taking magnesium and it really affected DS2 through my milk (still carry mummy guilt over that one).

sthitch · 31/01/2018 14:08

Thank you everyone! The dr says it’s one of those things....
However....
The new cream is working really well and I’ve seen a huge difference overnight! Bizarre as it’s the same product code as the other stuff I was using but a different brand. Fingers crossed it clears up completely but if not I have these suggestions so thank you!
