Injection fear

My daughter is in year 9 and is getting very upset at the thought of having to have her DTP and Meningitis injections next month. I told her it was important to have them done and the discomfort will be short-lived but she says she is just going to refuse and will hit out if anyone gets near her arms. She has had a few injections at the dentist which were ok for her and no other jab experiences since the usual preschool ones.

She's not an aggressive or confrontational person so I can't see her lashing out but I also haven't seen her quite so hysterical about anything else before.

She is bringing it up almost daily and getting into a real state each time. I have tried being very sympathetic but I always end up raising my voice and telling her to get a grip. She storms off in tears and nothing gets resolved. I will have to give the school my consent form next week and have no intention of declining it!

Any tips on how to handle this?

Can you arrange the jabs at your GP surgery rather than at school? Teenage girls are awful at winding each other up and knowing that it will be done in private may help.

I'm needle phobic. My dad and my sister have fainted from needles. I just shake and cry. But I find this quite humiliating- I would hate having anyone else see me get a shot.

I find it helps to turn my head away from wherever the needle is, and have the nurse tell me when the needle is away and it is safe to look. Then I get something I like, such as ice cream, afterward.
