How you keep a toddler warm and dry getting out of the car ?

Stupid question I know..

He's 1. We used to have a car seat I could carry him in but now it's fixed in.

It's been awful hail here recently.

It's just for getting him in and out of the house (2 mins) but the weather has been so bad it's made him cry with shock 2x now.

He's often tired so I don't want to pull a coat on him and wake him up. The blanket isn't working so well as it's so windy.

Have I missed a really obvious solution or do I just need to accept there is no perfect option? Maybe a big cosy hat??

I used to leave my coat undone and wrap DD in that, plus big hat on her. Well done for not using coat on him in car seat, so many people leave the oats on and it drives me potty!

Thanks 😊 coat isn't big enough to wrap around him.

Ok, I think maybe giant hat and blanket? I want something to protect his face from the wind and hail but there is nothing?

Grin oh I do, but it hailed and snowed for 2 hours last week. I got bored and needed a wee!

I have a biiiig blanket over DD in the car, that goes round her, she comes into my coat and I pop a hat on her head

sourpatchkid · 23/01/2018 23:31

Thanks 😊 I actually hadn't considered a hat until I posted. I shall online shop for one now

Not the point of the thread I know but which car seat did you go for? My one year old needs to move up out of the baby carrier and I'm lost in car seat jungle.

I live on top of a mountain and poor DD just gets hauled out of the car in rain or snow. I usually just run with her to the house and tell myself it's character building.

I've read tonight on another thread that you can get blankets that are approved to go in car seats and then wrap round once the seat is fastened, and can be lifted out with the (sleeping) child still wrapped in them, can't remember the name though sorry.

mymatemax · 23/01/2018 23:44

Just make a run for it. It may make him jump a bit but really won't do him any harm.
It's just weather, he'll get used to it.

Kursk · 23/01/2018 23:46

I jus did it, kids got wet. I said to myself that it Weather and they need to get used to it.

You can get something called a Morck that you wrap them up in the car, alternative is a star wrap. We had one when DS was little it was fab for keeping him warm and not too thick in the car seat. Only problem is it has feet, so if dc are walking you might have to work around it

I know and a bit of rain I don't mind and have managed with but really? hail hitting him directly in the face is horrible (it's been full on snow and hail storms) and if I can prevent that then I might as well.

@pastabest i already had the maxi cosi pebble so upgraded to the maxi cosi pearl but did loads of research and I'm (weirdly) happy with it. It's extended rear facing. I did LOADS of bloody reading around it all so happy to try to help you?

I had one who hid his face in my shoulder at the prospect of a drop of rain, and one who turned her face into the wind and laughed at hail bouncing off her nose..
