Terry nappies

Hi,

Just wondering how other mums manage when using terry squares on an older toddler during the day or if anyone has ever tried the larger sized squares from independent stockists.

My son at nearly 4 yrs is still nowhere near being reliably dry during the day so although I leave the nappies off as much as possible, I do still use them whenever we go out. I've always used terry squares and would prefer to continue with them for the short time left that he may need a nappy.

Whilst they work great and dont bother him I now find I'm resorting to using 2 at a time to get the necessary absorbency ( I pad fold one inside a kite fold and fasten with 2 pins). The only problem of course is the bulk for daytime use, the weather is getting warmer and if he's in summer shorts invariably we end up with unsightly terry cloth poking from leg holes etc

Are the larger toddler terries less bulky than 2 normal sized squares ? presumably a larger square allows different less bulky folds to be used ?

Does anyone else use terry squares during the day on an older todder ? what fold do you use and do you use 2 at once ?

Any help would be great, thanks.

have you tried bamboo terry squares? They are alot slimmer and a bit stretchy. www.babeco.co.uk do a 75cm one or you can buy bamboo cloth by the metre and make your own to size.

I use elliepants 78cm ones, gorgeous thick terrys. I use the jofold and while they are bulky, not more so than a totsbots I would say. They do last my ds (who is only 21 months but is a pretty big boy and can wee for england!) but not as long as my wambamboos or my bambenios. I am not sure I would use them out. Mostly use them for in the house. If you wanted to try them I am selling 6 of them (as I just bought more bambenios) for £20. Or I got mine from here

I have used bamboo terry squares and I found they are much slimmer too (although mine warped a bit and are very odd shapes now so are quite hard to fold) and more absorbant. I have not tried them on my ds alone though, only on my dd2 as a nappy and my ds1 as a booster for night time as they are 60cm so are too small for my ds1. Good for those two uses though!

Thanks for the replies, I've taken the plunge and ordered 6 of the 78cm Elliepants squares.

So long as they arent any more bulky than using 2 60cm ones at once I'll use them during the day, if not they can always be used just overnight.

At the mo I'm kite folding and fastening with 2 pins but a bigger square might allow me to try other folds.

How do other mums fold and fasten terries for older children ? (my son is almost 4 yrs)

I use the Jo fold as I have found it has more at the front for boys. I know my ds is under two but as I said he is a big boy and I have found that you have to kind of fan out the top where the nappy nippa goes so that it goes round their waist.

Having now tried the large Ellie terry squares I must say they are a great improvement on using 2 standard sized nappies at once, a bigger square makes it so much easier to get on nearly 4 yr old who hates having a nappy change in the presence of others.

The only minor draw back is the thickness of the material makes using pins a bit fiddly (I've tried nippas but prefer pins)

At the mo I'm using the Jo fold which works great but can be a little bit bulky under daytime clothes, what folds to others use on larger children ?

Incidentally, on the subject of pins am I the only mum still using them these days ?

With all the talk of nippas I'm beginning to feel left out by prefering pins :-(

I used pins, found nappy nippas useless.
Didn't have such a large active toddler in nappies, but good luck!

Um sorry but at 4 he is NOT a toddler anymore. Do the poor kid a favour and get him out of nappies. MY DS will be 4 in a few weeks and I would be horrified if a friend came to play in nappies still. You say he's not reliably dry during the day so you still put a nappy on him when you go out - well no wonder he's not reliably dry. In order for him to be consistent you need to be consistent. Just bite the bullet and do it ffs. Pack a bag full of spare clothes and wipes, but a plastic cover on his car seat and do it. It is the only way he's going to learn. Poor kid.

(and yeah, I know i"m going to get slated for saying this!)
