Having trouble weaning - at 10 months!

Would like some advice if possible. My son is 10 months old, i have been trying to wean him for 4 months and to no avail. He chokes on absolutly everything! I tried giving him mashed banana, steamed veg, he choked on puree and even choked on jelly! (Is that even possible?!) Anything that goes in his mouth end up either on the floor or with me pulling out of his throat because he cant breathe, i have been to the doctor who has referred him to a pediatrist but said it can take up to 2 months to get an appt. He will be a year old by then. Doc said they may have to do xray to see if he has developed pouches in his stomach or if he has a narrow wind pipe but he still takes his bottles fine and is slightly over the average weight. Im at my wits ends and starting to get terrified of feeding him solid incase he chokes again. He does have a sensitive gag reflex and so does my daughter (who is 3) but she only had the weaning problem for a month and grew out of it - what am i to do!?

Is he definitely choking rather than gagging? I know you have been to the doctors and they have probably gone through this with you but some babies do gag on food in quite a scary way but it is actually part of their development towards being able to manage food in their mouths.

Is he otherwise showing signs of eating to eat solids?

As a side I think most of the guidance advises against putting fingers in to try and get food out if they are choking/gagging as it can make it worse.

Thanks for the reply, i had alot of gagging with my daughter when she was weaning which was fine i got used to that. When the food gets to the back of his throat, he gags (as expected) but then this turns into choking as he doesnt make any noise has his tounge stretched out and his eyes water, he gets to the point where he goes blue and floppy and where he is strapped into his highchair, i cant get him out quick enough to help him so i have to put my fingers in there. He seems to have a problem with the gag as i know a gag reflex is to push food to clear the throat but when he gags...nothing moves, hence when he starts choking and struggling to breathe
