Congested baby

My little boy is a month old on Friday and he's still really congested since being a couple of days old. He's got a really chesty cough and is just generally congested, I just wondered if anyone had any suggestions to try & help?
I prop his cot up slightly as that seems to help, keep taking him in the bathroom with the shower on for the steam and I've tried the snufflebabe oil in water but nothing really seems to be relieving it?

Saline Nasal spray?

Smurfy23 · 17/01/2018 21:38

Snufflebabe on his chest might help? Keep an eye on temperature and use calpol if necessary. Saline nose spray and aspirator thingy if hes snotty to try to clear it out for him

Coughs and colds with babies are similar to us- you just need to wait it out. Plenty of cuddles- we dont go very far from the sofa when dd gets ill. He will perk up soon

Thank you!! On the box of snufflebabes vapour it says only over 3 months unless advised by docctor/health visitor so I don't know if I can use it or not 😩🙈 thank you for the advice !!! The joys of a winter baby ☺️

Are you breastfeeding? I’ve got a 12 week old who was congested from birth as you describe. Tried bed propping/saline drops/steam/nasal aspirator etc but what really helped was me cutting out dairy. I still have a splash of milk in tea etc, not no large quantities eg porridge made with milk, cheese sauces etc.

Does the congestion sound like it’s at the back of his throat rather than being due to a blocked nose? It might not be a cold. I’d be weary of using snufflebabe so young unless it is.

Use snufflebaby on his feet at bedtime (I did this with my 5 week old). Also, buy a humidifier for the room he sleeps in, it will help enormously. Saline drops, wait a minute and then aspirate.

Poor baby, i hope he has clear airways soon Thanks

Morrisons do a saline spray (can't remember the name) but it's from birth. Will looks when baby next wakes, it Works brilliantly
If I remember correctly it's in a light blue and white box

OP if you don't want to put it on baby's skin, you could put it in a bowl of hot (not boiling) water in your room at night, not too close to his crib though! My LO was born congested, threw up mucus for days after and at 12ish weeks it's only really just cleared up. I found popping him on his beanbag/in bouncy chair in the bathroom whilst I showered helped keep him clear for the morning or throughout the night. Definitely also try saline drops and then sucking the snot out with an aspirator, makes a world of difference!

Your baby is too young for Calpol. Saline spray is very effective.
