Toddler cries when baby cries

Anyone experienced this at all? I've just had DD2 4wks ago and DD1 2.5yrs has not really taken to her yet. Not really worried about that but the worse thing is pretty much every time DD2 cries or makes even the slightest grunting noise, DD1 cries but much louder! Sometimes just no tears crying, other times full on tantrum crying. If it happens when DD1 is eating something she will throw her food down and refuse to eat so mealtimes are a bit of an issue unless I remove DD2 from the room.

It's not just related to the new baby though, before she was born I do remember occasions where DD1 had cried when other kids cried at playground etc, also not keen on noise of vacuum unless I warn her first, and a bit funny about sirens and dogs barking but only when at my mums house(!??)

Obviously though with new baby she is exposed to the noise a lot more so it's happening a lot and driving me mad! Not sure whether I should try to avoid DD1 hearing the baby make noise or go the other way and make her hear it as much as possible to show her it's not going to go away so get over it!

Would love to hear if anyone has been through anything like this Confused

Mine did but they are only 16 months apart and the older one stopped once he got use to the crying (couple of weeks).

However, both kids went through a phase of not liking loud noises and being afraid, around 2/ 3 yrs old. I gave them ear defenders to use as and when they wanted, reasured them they were safe and free to leave the area, but didn't stop the noises.

My 2.5 year old DS does this when 3m old DD cries. It drives me mad.

Am hoping he will just get used to the noise and stop, and it is worse when he’s tired. Fortunately DD doesn’t cry that much, but it’s still super annoying to have 2 screaming kids to deal with
