Sleepbag weight/warmth for babies

Hi

I was wondering if I could get some feedback on sleepbags- What tog do you use for your child? If you are buying sleepbags is this something you look at or just the design?

Thanks for your help :)

Tog is definitely important to consider, especially if your child is within a SIDS risk age group, so you can dress appropriately for the room temperature. It's important to prevent the child overheating.

Most people have 2.5 tog whice is generallt a year round bag and you adjust the layers underneath depending on how hot or cold the room is.

Rarely you might need a 3.5 tog bag if the room is very cold (below 16 C).

Some people have a 1 tog for summer.

I'd start with a 2.5 tog if I were you. It's the most commonly available so you'll have a wide variety of design choices. Also consider if you want popper shoulders and side zip (easy night nappy changes) or fixed shoulders and a front zip (better for wriggly children).

I hope it’s OK to hijack this thread a little bit. I’m expecting baby #1 in a couple of weeks and we’ve bought a couple of GroBag hip healthy gro swaddles. They’re not labelled with a tog value but I suspect they’re much less than 2.5 togs, and our bedroom can get a little bit cold (although we plan to leave the central heating on overnight for a bit when he arrives). We are in the UK.

Does anyone have any thoughts / recommendations? Should we have gone with proper gro bags (as well or instead)? Thanks in advance.

thank you- so 1.5 most people only use in summer? then 2.5 for winter?

We use 2.5 tog all year round but adjust the layers underneath. There's a chart on the grobag website with recommended clothing at different temperatures. We also had a 1 tog one which was a lifesaver in the week of the 30 degree heatwave this summer and also when DD had a bit of a temperature after her immunisations

I stopped using them for DD2 a few months ago, but we had 2.5 for the winter and 1 and 0.5 for the summer.
When shopping I knew which tog I needed then picked the design from those suitable, so tog was more important than design.

Pretty much same as everyone else. I'm currently using a 2.5 grobag with 4mo DS. Got 1.5 ones for the warmer weathweather. Wouldn't be without them, especially as DS is a very wriggly baby so he can't pull it over his head or kick it off Smile

great, so interesting that people tend to go for 2.5. I thought 1.5 may have been standard!

I used cosy gro snugs until my dd reached 8lb 8 and could go into gro bags and since then I've had 2 of each tog. 2.5, 1 and 0.5 Which were used during the heat wave last year as the grobag is part of her nap time and bed time routine. I get them from tk Maxx or in twin packs from Amazon so they're a bit cheaper.

Agree with an earlier thread- 2.5 tog for all year - aside from the additional or less layers underneath on really cold nights i drape a cellular blanket as well and in summer just the blanket
