4 month old really poorly? A&E?

Ds1 3 has just got over what I think was a 48hr bug. Got into bed last night ds2 4 month started projectile vomiting everywhere. Has been since about 10 last night, about every hour and half he's projectile vomiting. I breastfeed but everytime I feed he starts to vomit again. He started up about 5 hour ago with a raging temp. I've tried cooling him down a little but he still has a temperature. Unfortunately got no thermometer Confused he's sleeping for the most of 15 mins a time and he looks so poorly Sad

I've been told the only thing to do is A&E Confused because he's so young and it's after every feed.

Just need a bit of advise please. I've tried to contact family but no one's answering and I literally don't have anyone else.

Thanks everyone.

Ring 111 for advice. You need medical advice as he's so young.

Pooshweens · 14/01/2018 09:19

Poor you and him, stressful! I would call 111 and ask for a doctor appointment immediately at hospital
Or if they can't offer that then head straight to a children's A and E

Havetohaveanewchufffingaccount · 14/01/2018 09:20

Definitely 111 and let them advise you. Hope things improve for your little one soon

With really little ones it's always best to seek advice, so 111 straight away and they'll tell you what to do next.

EveryoneTalkAboutPopMusic · 14/01/2018 09:26

Definitely ring 111 but have a read of this on Kellymom as well. I was once told not to feed when my DS was sick by a GP who just assumed I was ffing Hmm

LoniceraJaponica · 14/01/2018 09:27

Definitely seek medical help. They are so little and vulnerable at that age. I hope he feels better soon Flowers

Once he is well please buy a thermometer. DD gave us quite a few frights when she was little, and the first thing I was asked when I rang for advice was what was her temperature.

Doublemint · 14/01/2018 09:38

Hope 111 put your mind at ease and point you in the right direction.

Just wanted to mention that even if it seems he's throwing up the whole bf breastmilk is the most easily absorbed liquid and some of it will be absorbed even if he only keeps it down for a few minutes. Plus antibodies etc. So keep feeding! When mine had vom bugs I fed them little and often. Remember to keep yourself hydrated too!

PerfectlyDone · 14/01/2018 09:40

Seek RL advice - this is what NHS24 is for.

00alwaysbusymum · 14/01/2018 10:00

Get an appointment for our of hours gp if you can this morning.

IceBearRocks · 14/01/2018 10:36

Call 111 and buy a thermometer!!!!! It's a must !!!!

EveryoneTalkAboutPopMusic · 14/01/2018 10:37

@SwishSwishBITCH don’t forget to come back and let us know how you’re getting on Smile

SwishswishBiTCH · 14/01/2018 11:30

Rang 111, I've been to the out of hours doctors. They agree he has a temp. Currently at 37.2. They say he is not dehydrated, which is obviously a good sign. Its obvious he has that bug Sad She told me just to give him Calpol every 4 hour as well as DS1. And as long as he's drinking, even though he throws it up immediantly, he will not get dehydrated.

I've bought a thermometer Grin

Sounds like he’ll be fine and glad you’ve bought a thermometer. My DSIL didn’t “believe in them”. She changed her mind after her poor DS had a couple of convulsions...

BellyBean · 14/01/2018 18:15

DD had a bug when she was about 3mo, I found if I gave a small feed, even if she was crying for more, it would stay down better. Like sips of drink for older children.

ILostItInTheEarlyNineties · 14/01/2018 18:20

You could try some boiled cooled water in a bottle? The main concern is dehydration with vomiting so check out the main symptoms of dehydration in babies on the NHS website so you know what to look out for.

Hope he's better soon, it's awful when they're ill. And keep washing your hands! You don't want to be struck with it too.

EveryoneTalkAboutPopMusic · 14/01/2018 18:24

Lostin the BM will be enough to keep her baby hydrated and will have the added benefit of white blood cells. No need for the addition of water for a BF baby Smile

Scoobygang7 · 14/01/2018 18:30

@ILostItInTheEarlyNineties they do not recommend that any longer especially for breastfed babies and not formula fed unless it's boilin hot outside. Reason being there's very high risk of fatal water intoxication. It doesn't take very much to cause it either. Frequent breastfeeding is sufficient and is more quickly absorbed even with vomiting.

ILostItInTheEarlyNineties · 14/01/2018 18:43

Argh sorry! Please ignore my advice there.
Offering a bottle of water when they were sick was always promoted when mine were babies but that's going back a few years now.. sorry for the outdated info!

Scoobygang7 · 14/01/2018 18:51

No worries @ILostItInTheEarlyNineties it wasn't an attack just best to pick up on it in case someone else reading was unaware.

ILostItInTheEarlyNineties · 14/01/2018 18:58

Absolutely, guidelines have changed since I was a mum on most things!
I'm glad you pointed it out.

We were also advised to undress them and sponge them down with tepid water to cool a fever and I've noticed the NHS do not advise this anymore.

Scoobygang7 · 14/01/2018 19:36

Yeah @ILostItInTheEarlyNineties that's a recent change and also no stripping to nappy leaving them naked either. A year ago I as being told in hospital to do those things after my lb had his second sustained febrile convulsion. Apparently research shows it can be detrimental as it the skin will cool but the body core rises because the skin is cold.

EveryoneTalkAboutPopMusic · 14/01/2018 21:09

Well we’re all learning something. I didn’t know that about stripping and sponging either! Smile

SwishswishBiTCH · 15/01/2018 18:52

Hi everyone he's been much better today. No temp or vomit, But alot of stinky nappies. Ds1 hasn't been sick either today and neither has DH so I think we're doing ok for now!!
He's taking all his feeds. Giving Calpol every 4 hr. and my washing is finally done

I cooked him off yesterday by stripping down to nappy and skin to skin. I remember that slinging can cause the temp to go higher.

My dmil said water is best for him atm ConfusedConfused I tried telling her he's ok with breastmilk but she would not believe me as per. Maybe 30 years ago milGrin

ILostItInTheEarlyNineties · 15/01/2018 19:22

Ha I made the same mistake as your Mil. Always better to check current medical recommendations over old women's advice! She sounds rather bossy though..

Glad he's on the mend. One thing that doesn't change is the awful worry when your baby's ill and The Washing Mountain. I remember that well.
