8 days old, no poo for 24 hours

Exactly what it says in the title. My DS is 8 days old and hasn’t had a bowel movement for 24 hours. He has wet nappies throughout the day, and has had some spectacular bowel movements, but nothing today. He’s exclusively breastfed if this makes a difference. I’m a first time mum, so worrying about everything. Should I be concerned?

Forgot to mention he farts, so there’s definitely something going on down there!

I have a five week old and a three year old DD so appreciate how much you worry! My DD never pooed a lot and was told that EBF babies don't as they retain most of the milk and there is very little waste. That said, my DS poos very frequently.

Call your health visitor first thing who will advise what to do. If your baby isn't uncomfortable or in pain then I wouldn't worry.

Try and find a local baby massage class if you can, some HV's run free ones, as I learnt some really useful tips to get their little bowels moving (try squeezing the baby's legs up to their tummy-very gently or massage in a clockwork motion round their tummy)

The HV will help you in the morning.

Thank you so much. DH and I have just cheered as DS has just done a poo 😂. The things we get excited about! He didn’t seem to be in any pain, thankfully, and we’re at the drop in clinic tomorrow for a weigh so I’ll mention it then. Thanks again.

It's completely normal. Mine went 3-5, sometimes 6 days in the first 6 months without a poo quick regularly. It was only after she started solids that she started to go nearly daily. She was bf and then later ff but it made no difference. You only really need to worry if you're getting fewer wet nappies or poo is coming out hard and pellet like.

Justanewname · 12/01/2018 11:13

If there’s plenty of wet nappies then everything is probably absolutely fine and baby is just having a slow day for poos. Just in case though it’s always worth getting someone to watch you feed to check whether baby is transferring milk effectively and your latch is good. If nothing else it will reassure you which is always nice in those early days!

But it's absolutely not normal for a breastfed baby not to poo for days when they are very tiny. In the first few weeks once they have started having the normal yellow breast milk poos they should have about 3-4 poos a day and many will have a lot more, passing small amounts with every feed. After about 6 weeks then it is normal for it to slow down a lot and for them to start only going every few days.

kellymom.com/hot-topics/newborn-nursing/ Here’s a link to some more advice on what to expect in the early days of breastfeeding. I found this website really useful.

Also, congratulations!

Thank you. The breastfeeding specialist came out only the other day and, using a nipple shield, said he has a good latch. Goodness, there’s just so much to worry about!

EBF baby boy. Third child. A few weeks old.

He hadn't pooped for about 5 or 6 days. He wasn't in discomfort (that I could tell) and was peeing normally, however so many days seemed a lot and we started to get worried. I called the HV and she said she would pop round later that day and that it was pretty normal.

We went into town.

Having already had two kids before we thought we were prepared. We thought we knew what to expect. We thought we knew what we were in for.

We. Were. Wrong.

Cue, Mr Whippy-poop horror day.

DS began to poop. We changed the nappy sitting in the car. DS on my lap. During the change he began to poop more. And more and more. It wouldn't stop. We grabbed as much as we could in the nappy. The nappy bag nappies dwindled and yet more poop came. DH ran off to Boots and bought more nappies yet more poop came. We ran out of wipes. Yet more poop came. It was like someone had turned on a Mr Whippy tap and we couldn't turn it off.

I will never forget that day. I thought my son was possessed by a poop-demon. I don't know how he had so much in him!! DH and I still can't talk about DS's infancy without mentioning that and cracking up.

You have been warned Grin

Oh my! I'm wetting myself laughing here! And I have a sore throat. Stop! Stop! The memories are making it worse! :-)
OP - so glad your little boy pooped. :-) :-)

MrsHandles · 12/01/2018 12:40

Oh my god, I’ve just shared that post with DH, thank you so much for making us laugh! I shall look forward to a Mr Whippy in the near future.
Chocolate ice cream anyone?

Ah, the things that please us when we have little one - and bigger ones. :-) Before too long getting him to nap will be an achievement or you'll be thinking 'please please please for the love of God eat just one mouthful of this pap'. And the milestones! Oh the joy at the first tooth or the first step. You have much to look forward to. :-) :-)

RowenasDiadem · 12/01/2018 16:10

The best is yet to come.

"Pooplosions" that make you cut the baby vest off with scissors because it's just too damned poopey to take off any other way....

::evil cackle::

Pooping in the bath too.

Poopey liquid leakage onto your lap.

One day you will be scratching your head wondering why the hell you ever WANTED your child to poo.

MrsHandles · 12/01/2018 17:15

Hahaha! Loving these tales of poosplosions!

The longest my DS went was 15 days! 15 whole days. It was quite a poop at the end.
