HI J20baby, I personally, would choose a totsbots trial pack or motherease one size as i think they are much more reliable, although more pricey. You could pick some up second hand to try if you didnt want to shell out incase you dont get one with them, but saying that, they will sell second hand on ebay for almost what you paid (especially if they havent been used much). I started off with prefolds when i first started to use cloth, and while they are ok, I think that totsbots or some of the other fitted nappies are much better in terms of preformance and resale value! Hope that helps and I havent confused you even more!!

OP posts:
J20BABY · 25/04/2007 15:39

try this

OP posts:
chipmonkey · 25/04/2007 15:40

It works fine J2O! Now they are the sort of nappies I started off with but I have to say, I'm not mad about prefolds. If you do get them, make sure to get some fleece liners as the cotton gets very wet and the fleece acts as a stay-dry barrier. I do use them occasionally as they are inexpensive and a good back-up system but I prefer fitted nappies like Tots Bots and pocket nappies like Bumgenius.
I think they might be a good place to start though and you just gradually add to your collection. I would prefer doing that to getting a birth-to-potty pack which I feel doesn't give you a chance to try different sorts of nappies.

J20BABY · 25/04/2007 15:40

thanks jojo, i've already bought these others just put another link on, thinks it works this time!!

will try others that you mentioned, if i get on with reusable

OP posts:
jojo76 · 25/04/2007 15:43

the link works, by the way! i forgot to add, youll need a bucket or two to keep soiled nappies in, you might want to get a nappy mesh to put in the bucket so you can just transfer the whole lot into the washing machine with the net (though i havent got one and i dont miss it), some people use essential oil like lavender or t tree to put in the bucket to stop smells and in the fabric conditioner part of w. machine to freshen the nappies up, some people use napisan or similar in the wash or to soak nappies (i use a bit of nappy sanitiser to wash out really offensive pooey nappies to get the bits off before i put in machine - nice!). Also useful is lots of white vinegar, use a bit in the fabric contitioner drawer (with some essential oil if you like) to get rid of soap build up on your nappies and only use one washing powder tablet at most when you wash them. Soap build up can make the nappies stink to high heaven, the nice ladies on MN told me about the vinegar trick, never looked back since! are you using cloth for a newborn or older?

Flamesparrow · 25/04/2007 15:45

I don't get on with prefolds myself, but I know a lot of people do.

If you wanted to try out shaped etc cheap then the nappy lady classified ads are good for second hand (ebay won't let you sell them anymore)

jojo76 · 25/04/2007 15:48

I think they are a good price, and there are four wraps in there and the liners, which will be useful with other nappies even if you dont get on with the prefold ones. I think they are fine though, just not the best ive ever tried. Definitely a good idea to do as youre doing and buy a small amount of different types rather than spashing out on loads of one type that you might not get on with. Good luck, bet you get the bug and you'll be posting on here about all the funky nappies you've brought in a months time!!!

J20BABY · 25/04/2007 15:48

its for a newborn, only testing the water really, was just going to use while at home. is this all i'd really need to put on the baby, or do you have to put anything over it or in it?

OP posts:
jojo76 · 25/04/2007 15:49

oh my god, flamesparrow, wont they? why not??? I love looking on there for nappy bargains!!

J20BABY · 25/04/2007 15:51

thanks, i bet i end up selling them in a few monts time used once, given up!

OP posts:
jojo76 · 25/04/2007 15:56

You fold your pad, and put one of the liners over the top of the pad, its meant to contain the poo, so you can take it off and flush it away. You put the pad with its liner inside the waterproof wrap and pop it on the baby! they usually fasten with either poppers or velcro. the only thing you might find with this type of nappy is that they are more prone to leak newborn poo, because its quite explosive, where as with a fitted nappy like a tots because it fits round the legs and is sort of more gathered and fluffy, its catches the poo better and is less likely to leak. saying that i used the type of nappies you have got for my first initially and they were ok, just a bit more prone to poo leaks than the others!

J20BABY · 25/04/2007 16:00

thank you, kind of regretting it now!!

oh well, i'll see how i go.

ebay are meant to have taken reusable nappies off, there's been loads of threads about it, something to do with hygiene i think

OP posts:
chipmonkey · 25/04/2007 16:01

Flame, I noticed a few listings recently for used nappies with the disclaimer that the
"Seller takes responsibility for this item" or some such thing.

staceym11 · 25/04/2007 16:21

J20 i brought loads of prefolds for ds and i still use them although i do prefer shaped for night time. they fit him fine and hardly ever leak!

If you get on with the ones you brought i've got a whole load of nappy nation prefolds in newborn size that he's outgrown you can have for £25 including postage if you're interested.

iv also got 2 nappy nation shaped and 1 nappy nation AIO in size 1 if you're interested (£12 for all 3 including postage)

nappy lady classifieds is great for second hand nappies!

Flamesparrow · 25/04/2007 16:26

Ooh that sounds good (the "seller takes responsibility" thing)

J20BABY · 25/04/2007 18:37

Thanks Stacey, but not due till oct, so wont know till then when i've tried them, and i can't expect you to keep them till then! i'm sure someone will bite your hand off if you offer on the for sale x

OP posts:
J20BABY · 25/04/2007 18:38

plus i've no idea what they all are, are they different brands?

OP posts:
maisiemog · 25/04/2007 19:19

Hi J20, my ds is potty-trained during the day now, but we started out with prefolds until he was 6 months then bought fitted/shaped nappies.
I will definately be using prefolds again if I have another baby, as they are so fast-drying and cheap.
Because a new baby needs loads of changes, it is great if you can have quite a few nappies (I had 18 newborn, but bought another 6 junior joy size 1s,which are slightly larger)
Basically, I didn't want to wash them too often and was aiming at every third day - because I knew I would be busy and have lots of other things to wash.
That's why prefolds were great.
I must add, if you are going to use them on a newborn, use a nappi nippa to secure them, you will reduce all but the hugest leaks to a minimum. With prefolds, you may find that poop can leak onto the wrap slightly more often than with fitteds, so it's worth having about four wraps in the small size.
Good luck with it all.

staceym11 · 25/04/2007 21:35

J20 thats fine (did the sickness bands help any?) just thought i'd offer! if i get off my bum and put them up for sale im sure someone will buy them!

J20BABY · 26/04/2007 12:46

thanks everyone.

yes the bands where great thank you stacey, been thinking i should offer them to someone else on here, but worried about getting sickness later on in the pg, but if anyone see's this and wants them i'll forward them.

i'm eargerly awaiting my nappy dfelivery

hmm might try and find a baby to practice on with them, there's loads about!

OP posts:
maisiemog · 26/04/2007 20:51

That's what I did! Practised on my teddy! He wasn't quite the same shape as a baby - much bigger feet and a smaller bum, but he didn't move as much.
