we are going on hol in a couple of weeks. in this country i just use normal babys sun cream, but i feel that would be better abroad as it gives protection in the water, plus it will save on packing, as both me and my dh ues it too. she is 18 months.

It's got an SFP of 20, yes?

I really don't think that's high enough for a baby's skin - dd is almost 6 and I still use SFP40 on her.

Sorry, but I'd be sticking to the higher SFP stuff - particularly going abroad.

WendyWeber · 25/04/2007 12:39

I noticed in Boots the other day they have somebody's suncream (forget brand, sorry) which is also OK for 6 hours and it went up to factor 50.

About £13 a bottle but was on BOGOF.

Will see if I can find it on their website - I'll know it if I see it!

Furball · 25/04/2007 12:39

no please don't it has no UVA (the one that causes skincancer) protection WHATSOEVER.

I would buy a sunsuit and sunhat and pop down to boots and get a high factor with UVA and UVB protecion in you can get all day ones PizBuin do and all day one and Boots own brand is about 6 hours. A couple of bottles between you won't take up that much room.

It's not on the website - was a big yellow bottle (that narrows it down, doesn't it!)

WendyWeber · 25/04/2007 12:44

Oh, it was Boots own, thanks Furball! - Soltan Once - this is SPF 40 but I'm sure there was a 50 as well. £12, and it is on BOGOF still

WendyWeber · 25/04/2007 12:46

These pages have all the factor 40-50 products.

Furball is right though, one of those sunscreen sunsuits would be best, then just sunscreen on the outside edges.

WendyWeber · 25/04/2007 12:50

Lioninthesun (love that name!) has baby ones up to 24 months.

Will shut up and go away now

Furball · 25/04/2007 12:53

27 quid blimey, don't pay that much! Next do factor 40 ones for about a tenner!

WigWamBam · 25/04/2007 13:16

Boots have bogof on loads of suncreams at the mo - all their Nivea Sun and Soltan creams (possibly other brands, I wasn't paying too much attention). All types, all SFPs, children's ones as well. They're all about £11 - £13 a bottle, so at two for the price of one they're good value.

lizandlulu · 25/04/2007 13:35

ok thank you, i didnt realise it didnt have uva protection. that soltan once sound good, i will try that one.

SPF 20 is fine as long as it has uva/uvb protection, you will just have to apply it more regularly that's all!

Callisto · 25/04/2007 15:09

All the advice that I have heard is keep young children out of the sun as much as possible - I think 1 and under is no sun at all. Young skin burns really easily so cover up as much as possible and use a factor 50 sunblock.

Scottishthistle: no offence but that sounds like bullshit to me.

ScottishThistle · 25/04/2007 15:17

SPF 20 simply means it will protect your skin against burning for 20x longer than it would without cream.

Young children shouldn't be in the sun long enough to actually need a SPF 50, but that's just my opinion!

ash6605 · 25/04/2007 15:20

there are offers on suncreams at superdrug and avon too-loads of bogof's. i always use at least a f40 when abroad, well even in this country actually but i tend to apply it a lot more often on holiday than i do here.

Lovecat · 25/04/2007 15:53

The things you learn on MN...

I've used Riemann P20 for several holidays in very hot temps (Dubai, Vegas etc) and loved it because it didn't need reapplying and it still let you get a tan... now I know why! Didn't use it on dd last year in Majorca as there was no info re. children and she has sensitive skin, v. glad we didn't now!

lizandlulu, if there's a LIDL near you, their factor 50 infants suncream is £2.49 a bottle and works really well - there was a thread on this last week. It's so cheap you don't mind reapplying it every 10 minutes! (although I would warn that the colourvision version temporarily stains clothes - it does wash out, but your fingernails, clothing etc will be left with dayglo green smears in the meantime!)

ash6605 · 25/04/2007 15:57

theres also NO-ad,it's very cheap, but it does work.

suedonim · 26/04/2007 03:14

We use Bergaderm. It's nice to use, being a mousse, has both UVA&B protection, is non-greasy and non-smelly. One application lasts 6 hours and it's water and towel-proof. I buy it in Sainsbury's. But I agree that at 18mths it's much easier to use a sunsuit so you only need to watch the lower arms & legs and face.

suedonim · 26/04/2007 13:20

.

alex8 · 26/04/2007 13:24

ultrasun is fab, doesn't need reapplying and neither me nor my son has ever been burned. it has uva and b unlike p20

ultrasun

alex8 · 26/04/2007 13:28

callisto try looking at this from the cancer research website. there is very little differeence btw sp 15 and sp50

spfactors

alex8 · 26/04/2007 13:31

it also says

No sunscreen - no matter how high the factor - can offer 100 per cent protection.

spf15 sunscreen offers about 93% protection

spf30 sunscreen offers about 96% protection

spf60 sunscreen offers about 98% protection

Furball · 26/04/2007 13:52

Yes Ulrasun is good but can be tricky to get hold off as via internet alhough I think Waitrose now sell it.

ScottishThistle · 26/04/2007 14:03

Thank you Alex8, I was very aware I wasn't talking bullshit!

electra · 26/04/2007 14:06

Not sure about P20 but we use a sunscreen that has fewer chemicals so it's about 25.
